Frequency Review: The Edison Effect (Season 1 Episode 10)

Frequency, Reviews

On Frequency Season 1 Episode 10, “The Edison Effect,” things get a lot more thrilling and exciting. The last couple minutes have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Before diving into the end of the hour, let’s talk about Meghan’s tapes and the flashbacks. Those scenes are definitely the highlight of the case so far. Do you agree?

Through Meghan, we see the monster that is Deacon Joe. Raimy, Frank, and Satch have all theorized what motivates the Nightingale’s kills, but all they have are theories.

Meghan gives us proof and first hand accounts that the police aren’t crazy to suspect Deacon Joe of being the Nightingale. She shows us what he did to her brother and mother, and she explains why he kills or, as he puts it, “saves.”

It would be nice to get inside Deacon Joe’s head to see how he views his actions. Meghan gets us closer to him than we’ve ever gotten, but her accounts still aren’t enough, at least not for me. There’s still a lot to learn about why he does what he does.

When Meghan mentions how he killed all those women, he gets really upset and insists that he did not kill them. His anger could just come from a distorted mental state where he thinks that the women did not really die, or maybe it doesn’t, and Meghan really is a liar.

Does anyone else have this nagging feeling that maybe he’s not the Nightingale? Meghan gives detailed accounts of all the terrible things things he did to her family, but she does not seem to know anything about the other victims.

I could just be a little paranoid, waiting for one last twist to drop, but it would be helpful to make more connections between Joe and the other Nightingale victims.

But can you imagine Raimy having to face the fact that she did not kill the Nightingale, that she just killed a random scumbag? The main reason why Raimy kills Deacon Joe is because he killed her mother.

She does not kill him for Meghan or for the dozens of women that he has killed. Raimy kills Deacon Joe because she has felt this pain and rage inside of her ever since she saved her dad’s life and, as a result, took her mom’s.

Oh, and she also thinks that Frank is going to kill him that same night in 1996 and change the future, so killing Deacon Joe will not have any consequences for her. Yeah, tomorrow is going to suck for Raimy.

Raimy killing Deacon Joe is not all that surprising. We’ve seen her anger before, when she kicked the crap out of a suspect and almost killed the guy. Whether or not Raimy had it in her to kill the Nightingale was never a question.

The manner in which she kills him is very surprising. She could have shot him in the back, when she first catches up to him by that gas station. Then, it would have looked like Raimy shot him as he was fleeing the scene.

No, Raimy shoots him on his knees. He surrenders, and then she shoots him and shrugs it off, saying it doesn’t matter. This is definitely a lot more shocking.

Even though that future could have been erased by Frank, Raimy still had it in her to kill someone and not even care. Aside from her one comment to the cop, we do not know how she is going to react, but I bet she will not even the slightest bit of guilt for taking Deacon Joe’s life.

Hopefully, we will explore how Raimy is coping or not coping with her actions. It could be a great way to delve into her psyche a little bit.

  • I don’t believe Deacon Joe is the Nightingale. It was way too convenient that he suddenly opened up that wall for Raimy to find the body. I think he got a call from the real killer that something was hidden in his house, and he was desperately trying to get it out ahead of the police. He’s an abusive monster, but not the killer.

The real killer? The best candidate now is Big Gordo. He was right on the spot in 1996 and could spy on calls from Raimy to Frank, and maybe even make some future-to-past calls of his own when she isn’t home. As a defense attorney he knows something about evidence and crime scenes to make his frame-up.

For Raimy to get in trouble for shooting Joe in 2016, he has to still be there. But now Joe has at least been abducted. It’s possible that Frank will now be going to prison for kidnapping him (motive being to rob the church and blame Joe). But in that scenario, it’s hard to imagine Joe sticking around to be accused of being a serial killer in 2016. So she’s off the hook, unless some bizarre coincidence puts him back there.
