Chicago Med Review: Folie a Deux (Season 3 Episode 11)

Chicago Med, Reviews

We’re in for a pretty intense hour right from the start.

As I mentioned in my preview of Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 11, the French word folie translates to madness. Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 11, “Folie a Deux,” is certainly filled with just that.

This episode covers a sensitive topic: vaccinations. I like the way Will coins it, as a “mass hysteria.”

That’s what it is. I personally don’t get the flu shot and another vaccine because of my medical history. Nevertheless, I don’t have children, so I can’t speak for parents who choose whether or not to get their children vaccinated.

Vaccinations are a tricky subject. But it’s simple to do your research, talk to your doctors, and make sure you’re aware of others around you.

The mother of the baby with whooping cough on this episode is unaware that her sister, Wendy, and her controlling brother-in-law, Ben, made the decision to not vaccinate their son.

Again, it does not make them bad parents to not vaccinate. They are doing what they think is best for their child. Is it right? Honestly, I don’t know. There are pros and cons when it comes to vaccinations, and that’s that.

However, they are 100% wrong to not tell their family members. Or rather, not to tell anyone in their family who has a baby, like Wendy’s sister.

If the parents let their family members know, then maybe Abby getting whooping cough from her cousin might’ve been prevented.

Natalie yells at Ben in the waiting room, and if I was there, she would have gotten a standing ovation. She, as a doctor, is furious about another child going without vaccines. But more importantly, she’s angry that the mother of her patient had no clue she was putting Abby in a dangerous situation by allowing her child to be in close quarters with her older cousin.

She’s also angry that Ben and Wendy’s son is in the waiting room with other children, and those children could be at risk as well. Dr. Manning through and through is a compassionate, extraordinary doctor who protects everyone she possibly can.

Dr. Manning: Get your son out of here! Now!

Will being at the vending machine when Natalie calls out Ben is just icing on the cake. He did not intervene because he knows his girlfriend is a badass who can take care of herself.

Now, Dr. Reese’s father has been absent from her life. Dr. Charles has been more than a mentor to her — in a way, he’s been something of a father figure. He looks out for her wellbeing and believes in her.

So understandably, he becomes very suspicious of her father, who comes to Chicago to reconnect.

He feels sympathetic at first because he knows the struggle of reconnecting with his own daughter, Robin.

But soon, we find out Sarah’s father seemingly only returns because of his health (which he plans on not telling her about) in the hopes that he can latch onto her for help and financial assistance.

The problem is, because he comes to Dr. Charles as a patient at the beginning, Dr. Charles (legally) can’t tell Sarah any of this.

I assume he did this on purpose, because he only seems to care about himself. Sarah’s dad seems like a selfish, manipulative man who made sure all loose ends were tied up. Also, he has yet to pick up his prescription from Dr. Charles, and he doesn’t have any friends. Someone who doesn’t have friends, or someone who has burned a lot of bridges, can’t be trusted in my book.

Meanwhile, Sarah (who was at first against the idea of reconnecting with him) decides to give it a go. She’s letting herself be vulnerable and open for her father.

The final blow in this madness was from Alanna, the sweet friend of Brittany’s. I’ve known an Alanna in my life. She isn’t as nearly as bad, because Dr. Charles assumes Alanna is a psychopath. The Alanna I know is not that extreme.

But she did have some of the same qualities: acting innocent, lying, being manipulative, using people.

Poor Trent was just trying to live his life in his apartment. Poor Brittany was just trying to live hers as his neighbor. Then Alanna swoops in and goes as far as making her “friend” so paranoid that she stabs Trent, all so she could get his apartment.

What is that about? It’s Chicago; there are tons of other apartments out there. More than that, she makes herself out to be this saint, justifying her behavior as that of a good friend. Yeah, okay. She’s making sure Brittany never leaves her because she’s using her for her own gain.

Like, before rushing to her “friend’s” side, she asks Dr. Charles if Brittany had mentioned something about a check for her? Girl, she fell down the stairs — why do you think that would be a priority right now?

Other Thoughts:

  • FINALLY! The sexual tension between Dr. Bekker and Dr. Rhodes ends with a passionate kiss. That’s been building up for such a long time. I’ve been waiting for it all season! She better be careful, because he’s still broken from Robin, and I think Ava may have real feelings for him.
  • Bekker should not have been so cold to Dr. Sexton. Even Connor comforts him about that fact. He did everything he could and he could not have known, as all signs pointed to a heart attack. Plus Noah went over everything with Dr. Stohl, his superior, who also thought it to be a heart attack.
  • April and Ethan playing with water guns in their underwear is the cutest, purest thing. It was like Mr. and Mrs. Smith but with just water and smiles, not bullets.
  • I loved Will coming up to Natalie and telling her that what she did was a very Will thing. These two are always causing scenes when it comes to protecting their patients, and they’re so compatible it hurts. #Manstead is such a perfect match.
  • My heart breaks for Maggie. She lets Barry back into her life, and he hurts her. He kept a big secret from her that he should not have: his own name. That’s a pretty major thing to keep from someone you love.

  • Parents who don’t vaccinate DONT have to inform everyone else. This show was a huge disappointment! There was never any testing done that concluded that the cousin has whooping cough. Quite the contrary, he didn’t. Never manifested as anything other than a cold. And you completely missed the giveaway line in the show. Don’t feel bad, most will. It’s like a disclaimer. See, if your vaccinated it’s called croup. If your not, they label you with whooping cough. Let me tell you the obvious- you can’t givr a disease that you don’t have! Other major flaws in this show trying to shape the minds of the viewers- the doctor she said who started this, she is referring to Andrew Wakefield- was not the only doctor signing off that vaccines are dangerous and toxic (read the package insert!) and later the accusations against him were retracted. We’ve got almost 80 dead holistic doctors since 2015 that we’re trying to tell you about the risks of vaccines. Look it up. So many things wrong with this episode. If you want to put your life in the hands of someone “practicing” medicine that’s your choice. Keep taking the blue pill sheeple.

    • Anti-vaxxers like this spread spread diseases which are already controlled by vaccines and jeopardize people who are uncompromised.

  • I think anti-vaxxers should stay home-schooled instead. I think it is incredibly selfish and stupid coming from engineers: people who have a high level of education, making “informed” decisions when tens of thousand of studies, reports, articles has proven otherwise that vaccines are not harmful, and does nothing to cause autism???? MAn, that fraud has been thoroughly discredited and yet this is being perpetuated by stupid memes, ignorant celebs/influencers who try to promote it as a “healthy” lifestyle choice, mass hysteria that is relying on one selfish fact. THat their child is protected by a majority that will be vaccinated (disgusting sense of entitlement there). It’s one thing that your child is allergic to vax (which requires herd immunity to protect your child) and another to willfully expose the rest of your community to preventable and possibly lethal dieseases. Smallpox, meningitis, measles, rubella and polio… why still go to hospitals when you are sick or dying then? Please live in the woods or somewhere in the far outskirts of civilization from the rest of us if you are so skeptical of modern medicine. I have a right to a safe environment.

  • I really liked your review! Just watched the episode tonight and I 100% agree with everything you said.

  • Is there a sequel or follow-up that tells what happens to Alanna and Brittany?
