Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 5 Review: What’s Hiding in the Dark

Chicago Med, Reviews

When Archer was revealed as Asher’s baby daddy, we knew tensions would be high. While that was the case for Ripley for a bit, Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 5, “What’s Hiding in the Dark,” shows it is also happening between the mother and father duo.

At first glance, one might think, just like Archer does, that Hannah carries certain shame in admitting he is the father. She’s not giving him the place he so desperately wants to claim.

While it’s true that “my body, my rights,” under different circumstances, Asher and Archer would have been able to have a conversation regarding the baby without arguing. Now, they can’t bring the topic up without exploding.

Of course, Archer is worried about everything regarding their baby, and Hannah has put on the OB uniform to assure everything is okay. But it goes beyond the baby’s well-being.

As Asher begins to work with a new patient, viewers can get a better understanding of what’s going on with her. The patient mentions she never took a pregnancy test because that would have made the pregnancy real.

That is when it clicks for everyone. Asher is still afraid to make this pregnancy real. A big part of her still believes she doesn’t deserve to be a mother because of her past and what happened with her sister.

By talking to Archer about the baby, the baby becomes a reality. It is one she’s not ready yet to face.

When the conversation is about everything else, Archer and Asher still have the connection that has made so many fans happy. To keep that and coparent, the duo will need to have a long and deep conversation about what’s truly going on.

Otherwise, she will carry the fear alone, and he will continue to think it’s all about shame.

If the theme of Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 5, “What’s Hiding in the Dark,” is pretending things aren’t real, Lenox has been doing a great job at pretending her diagnosis doesn’t exist.

When we see her brother show up, we can notice the roles have been reversed. Kip notices the same, as he mentions he’s gotten his act together, while Lenox chooses to sleep around.

While there is absolutely no judgment and she is free to do whatever (or whoever) she wants, this behavior isn’t compatible with who she is. Eventually, it will all come crashing down on her.

The picture-perfect, organized persona can’t live with the sleep-around and do-whatever persona. At some point, she will have to face her reality.

Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 5, “What’s Hiding in the Dark,” prepares us for the inevitable: Bert is dying.

It is quite heartbreaking to watch Goodwin navigate her ex-husband’s reality. While she doesn’t owe him anything, she’s too hard on herself when she loses her temper.

There is something quite magical about women like Goodwin and Lenox opening up to Archer about the hardships they face. A man who seems so stoic is always the one to bring the comfort they seek.

If only Hannah would catch up to this.
