School Spirits Season 3 Episode 4 Review: The Bereftest Club
Maddie has been one of the most stable characters. However, that wall of stability starts to crumble on School Spirits Season 3 Episode 4, “The Bereftest Club.” A lot happened in Maddie’s life over the last three seasons.
She went to the afterlife, fell in love, found out her boyfriend had been cheating on her, her mother relapsed, and multiple people in her life were accused of murdering her. She also came back from the dead.
That’s not even counting all the other random things that Maddie endures. Yes, she had moments of losing it, but mainly kept her cool. This makes “The Bereftest Club” so monumental.

Maddie is now breaking down. She has to deal with her father’s ghost around, her mother relapsing again, and her best friend in danger of not returning. Anyone else would have broken down two tragedies ago.
This breaking of Maddie finally shows how much she’s been through. You kind of go through the emotions alongside her. However, taking a moment to see things more clearly, you notice just how overwhelming it would all be for anyone, but especially a teen girl.
This also makes the Wally and Maddie moment so important and sweet in “The Bereftest Club.” The first two seasons of the show involve Maddie and Wally figuring out their feelings.
Season 3 proves that they’re perfect for each other. They have a maturity that you wouldn’t expect from teens. Technically, Wally is very old. However, he still operates with the brain of a teen.
Additionally, School Spirits Season 3 proves that relationships can have issues without going the usual drama routes. Wally and Maddie’s problems revolve around their barriers to being together, but Maddie is also emotionally suffering right now.

He can only help her so much.
Xavier acts as a stand-in for Simon and Wally. You almost forget that Xavier and Maddie were a couple, but we suspect that will become a new problem for Wally and Maddie.
Wally matured over the three seasons. However, we repeat, teen boy brain. He may find himself jealous that Maddie grows closer to her ex-boyfriend.
It doesn’t seem like Maddie and Xavier will start to develop feelings again, but we see a world where Wally feels inferior because Xavier can support her outside of school.
The Xavier and Maddie development should offer some interesting exploration of that past relationship. He hurt her by cheating.

Is this all resolved?
If not, Maddie may finally confront him about the things he did in their relationship that hurt her. This may finally offer some closure. Maddie has been so busy just trying to handle one dire problem after another that she has not been allowed to be a teen.
Now, she can do things like confront her cheating ex-boyfriend. School Spirits permits Maddie to break down over her mother’s relapse, showing that the show will let her have some human moments.
She will save the day, but also work on her healing process. She has a lot of trauma.
“The Bereftest Club” is another strong episode in Season 3 with plenty of fun moments, including Quinn’s dream sequence. It’s showcasing new relationships and allowing Maddie these human moments that she’s been running from for two seasons.
