Frequency Review: Signal Loss (Season 1 Episode 13)

Frequency, Reviews

On Frequency Season 1 Episode 13, “Signal Loss,” aka the season (probably series) finale, the search for the Nightingale is still going on, even once the hour is up.

In terms of the Nightingale storyline, this is a great finale. It wraps everything up nicely, so that when there isn’t a second season, viewers won’t feel too ripped off. There’s no big cliffhanger. Raimy gets her happy ending.

Of course, on the very slim chance that there is a second season, the finale gives you a tease as to what season two could be about.

Robbie Womack is still at large, so season two could feature his re-emergence as the Nightingale. Of course, it’s unclear how the ham radio would fit into everything.

Honestly, if there was a season two (and if I was to actually watch it), I would want it not to feature the Nightingale. I would want some brand new mystery or season-long case to solve.

I’m honestly not sure how the ham radio would be involved, but it would need to be; it’s either that or give us Frank in the present day. The show would not work without Raimy and Frank’s relationship.

Frank and Raimy’s relationship is the core of the show. For the majority of the season, the episodic elements suffered, but Frank and Raimy’s dynamic kept you coming back for more.

The two of them shared some amazing, emotional scenes, and the finale does not disappoint in that regard.

Frank: I don’t want to give up on this either because I don’t know what I would do without you.

There’s a nice end to Raimy and Frank’s time traveling chats, or however you want to describe them. The two of them get to say goodbye. Of course it’s more of a “I don’t want this to end” goodbye than an actual goodbye, but there is a sense of closure there.

This finale really gets your blood pumping. Your on the edge of your seat as Raimy realizes that Deacon Joe isn’t the Nightingale and as Robbie lashes out. It’s one of the more exciting episodes of the series, honestly.

Of course, there is one aspect of the finale that comes out of nowhere — Miracella and Stan.

Their storylines did not work. They should have been forgotten about. All their reappearance does is remind you of how much you hated their storyline, at least that’s my reaction to seeing them again.

In a finale, you need to use up every minute you have on something captivating. Miracella coming out of hiding to shoot Stan is definitely not captivating.

  • Did Robbie really “stop” in 1996? He has become a free agent who can take new actions that propagate into the future only as he does them (like the attempted taking of Julie at the end). The series could continue with him as an active threat both in the present and the past.
