Reviews

Letting go and letting in are keys to Maddie’s future. School Spirits Season 3 Episode 7, “Midsomester,” deals with Maddie releasing some of her anxiety and tension. It’s been building all season.

Multiple people act as Maddie’s anchors. They help her deal with the ever-growing danger and trouble awaiting the group. She has an emotional moment with her father’s ghost and Xavier.

This finally leads her to tell her mother the truth. In an unexpected moment, she believes her.

Sandra has not shown the traits and behavior of a stable parental figure. She’s been living in the shadow of the memory of Maddie’s father and wrestling with addiction. Additionally, Maddie’s mother has earned her reputation as an inconsistent parent.

Sandra has caused her daughter emotional scars.

However, School Spirits has shown how much she loves Maddie. We never doubt it, but we worry that Sandra cannot care for her daughter as needed.

This changes with “Midsomester.” It brings out the nurturing side of Sandra that Maddie craves.

It only happens with her father and Xavier’s assistance. They help her relax and open up to her mother. This is a breakthrough moment for Maddie. It’s just unfortunate that it comes when she could lose someone she loves.

Wally’s end may be near.

The boy ghost who could have peaked in high school seems like a School Spirits staple character. Nonetheless, Milo Manheim has just been cast as one of the leads in one of the biggest upcoming projects: the live-action Tangled.

His time working on that movie could limit his time on this Paramount+ show.

He can split time between multiple projects. However, “Midsomester” succeeds at giving viewers the impression that Wally may not return for a potential Season 4.

Viewers may experience a false sense of confidence with Maddie and Simon also in their mysterious world, because surely all three can return?

Wally is the only actually dead person, so Simon and Maddie may return, but maybe not him.

The show may be setting up the next episode as the dramatic and official goodbye to the beloved character. Maddie is getting closer to her parents, and Xavier may be the show’s way of showing that she has a support system outside Wally.

This may make the transition away from Maddie and Wally easier — if the show returns for another season.

Wally’s departure could also mean that the show plans for an uncertain future by closing some doors in case it doesn’t return. However, it feels like School Spirits has a few more seasons left of storytelling.

The episode feels like the start of a major change for the show — with or without Wally.

School Spirits Season 3 has been a very experimental season. It feels like the end of a major chapter, which could mark the end of the show or a fresh start. Either way, the finale will be a must-watch event.

The theme of letting someone in and letting someone go works well in “Midsomester” as it marks an intriguing lead-up to the finale. Let’s pray everyone returns.
