5 Reasons You Should Be Excited About The CW’s ‘Frequency’
Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con brought us a whole slew of new shows to be excited about. And yet, at the end of the night, though I enjoyed most of them, only one made me feel like I needed the second episode to start right after the first one ended.
Yes, Frequency is the show I’m most excited about come Fall, and here are five reasons why you should be excited about it too:
5. Because it’s not exactly a time travel show, and yet it does consequences right
The problem with time travel shows is that more often than not, they skew consequences, forget about stakes and just, well, let their characters have fun. And, though, in the short-term, that can be entertaining, in the long-run, it makes for apathetic fans.
Not so on Frequency, which introduces consequences – big time, right away. It’s easier to care about the characters when you feel like something might happen to do. It’s just human nature.
Threaten to take something away from me, and I will fight for it. Let me have it and I might not care.
4. Because, sports, and music, and oh, the 90’s
Sometimes the atmosphere just draws you in, and if you were a kid/teenager in the 90’s, this is the right show for nostalgia. From the sports references (Oh, 1996 Braves, how you broke my heart) to the music, Frequency knows just what buttons to push.
And push they do. So, so hard.
3. Because strong female lead
There’s many more of those than, let’s say, ten years ago, but it’s still both refreshing and wonderful to see Peyton List get to really sink her teeth into Raymi Sullivan, a no-nonsense cop who can, unsurprisingly, balance both a happy personal life and a fulfilling job.
Just goes to show that it’s possible. It happens. And TV is starting to resemble real life in that way.
In the little things. The important things. The life-altering ones.
Like a strong woman being allowed to be strong, loving, vulnerable and though. Because she’s all of those things. She’s allowed.
It’s wonderful. Refreshing.
Exciting.
2. Because it reminds us of how fleeting life can be
Frequency does many things right, but mostly, it touches something deep inside us – the thing that makes us hug our parents goodbye, kiss our significant other, tell our friends we love them.
Life is short. We better take advantage of the time we have. And, more importantly, we better let the people we love know how we feel before it’s too late.
This is a hard and fast lesson of life, but what is television there for but to remind us of the things that matter? I saw many tears during the Frequency screening, and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only one who sent a few pointed messages after it ended.
After all, we still have time. We better take advantage of it.
1. Because father-daughter relationship
We’re used to Mother-daughter, Father-son, but there are few shows, if any, that focus on a father-daughter relationship the way Frequency does. And that’s good because it’s different, and it’s also good because …well, FEELS.
For the father who left a kid and found an adult daughter that he didn’t raise. For the girl who lost her father, thought him a criminal, and then re-discovered him and his story once again. For all of us who have a father, don’t have one, or dream about having one.
The family feels are just strong with this one. Trust us. It’s hard to express. And it’s one of the reasons (probably the most important one) why we’ll surely be watching come October.
