The Vampire Diaries Review: Best Served Cold (Season 7 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Vampire Diaries

Lets give you a moment to pick your jaw up from the floor after that episode of the The Vampire Diaries.

And maybe finish that second glass of wine. And just make sure you’re still breathing!

Am I right?

This episode, entitled “Best Served Cold” is an absolute jaw dropper. There are so many twists and turns, and we even get a couple of answers — although those answers make us scream and yell at the absurdity of the whole situation.

The theme for this season seems to be parenting and family. We get to see how the bond of family affects other aspects of life; we get to see the unbreakable bond a parent has with child and vice versa, and we get to see what the loss of family can do to a person.

Personally, I love this theme. This week we get to see Lilly’s cold, dead heart peek out from under her ruthless exterior as she defends her sons, and we get to see Damon and Stefan talk about wanting kids. The Vampire Diaries has always been about the Salvatore brothers, and this season is really bringing us back to that.

I love that the writers have decided to take things back to the good ol’ days — when there was scheming and betrayal and murder. I like seeing Damon and Stefan plotting to kill like it’s no big deal. And, I like seeing their brotherly love too. It seems like its true: with Elena gone, the writers can focus more on the remaining characters. The scene of #Defan reminiscing about their dad, and even talking about their dreams of having a family, gives me so many feels! It’s a bittersweet moment as they lay out their hopes with such vulnerability, while knowing, they can never achieve them biologically.

Speaking of biological children… let’s talk about that cliff hanger for a second, shall we? How on this green earth is Caroline pregnant with Jo’s babies in her undead uterus?!

Yep, go ahead and read that last sentence again.

I knew they had to write in Candice’s pregnancy somehow, but this?! This! Really?

At least it explains why Rick and Care are engaged in the future. Oh yeah, that was just another bomb that’s dropped today. But I guess, it makes some sense. These characters have all had some really messed up childhoods. It makes sense for them to want to raise children in a complete and “normal” family. But why this way? And why is Caroline so upset at Stefan in the future? Could it have to do with a towel-clasped Valerie? Or just that he still isn’t being completely honest with her?

Either way, I cannot wait to find out.

“Best Served Cold”  really raises the stakes for Season 7 and reminds us all why we love this show. It’s still starting fresh and becoming its own after Nina Dobrev’s departure, but holding onto its roots. If the writers continue this way, I could see the The Vampire Diaries giving Supernatural a run for its money when it comes to longstanding CW shows.

Things to think about:

  • That sexual tension between Bonnie and Enzo was palpable. When did I start shipping them?
  • Can Matt have a badge that says “Default Deputy” please?
  • As nice as Valerie is, many characters have said she’s batshit crazy. Why?
