The Originals Review: Beautiful Mistake (Season 3 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Originals

This episode of The Originals, titled “Beautiful Minds,” continues to build on female driven storylines we want to see.

Despite being pressured, attacked, and put down by surrounding forces Rebekah, Freya, Camille, and Hayley fight back with all they’ve got. On the enemy side of things, Aurora gains the upper hand and teaches Klaus who’s really in charge in this twisted relationship.

The women of the Mikaelson family are a strong unit. They travel across seas and astral project themselves at the drop of a dime just to protect each other or have a quick drink. Freya and Rebekah value the bond they now have and make an effort to spend time with each other. And even though Hayley is on the outs with Klaus she will fight for the return of Rebekah’s body. Not because she owes her sister in law (that’s a loose definition of what they are) a debt for caring for her daughter Hope. She’s going to do it because ‘us girls have to look out for each other.’

Aurora’s word that Rebekah will be safe means absolutely nothing. It’s meant to lock Klaus in a bind. If he betrays her Aurora will hurt his sister and then lock them all away, ending the Mikaelson’s reign of power over their sire lines. So he has to be a good boy. Klaus will have to follow absolutely every whim and fancy she so desires. Even if he grows to loathe her, there’s nothing he can do but sit along for the ride. He’s given up his control to a woman who loves him, and after this episode, believes he returns her affections.

On the human side of things, Cammie isn’t having the best of days. After being arrested and kidnapped, she’s forced to help Tristan recover an object that can trap The Originals. As usual, Cammie holds her ground. She stays strong in the face of danger and goes as far as tricking her captor. (Don’t lie Lucien. You didn’t see it coming.)

He is stronger and faster than her and she doesn’t care. She’s faced danger enough times to realize that it doesn’t help to play nice with the supernatural community of New Orleans. She has to bite back and show them that humans are just as fierce as vampires.

The women of The Originals are a force to be reckoned with. Each one is determined to survive and thrive together and for each other. We need more episodes like this where the focus is on the daily struggles, achievements, and even failures of their lives.

It’s doubtful that women are going through the particular issues our ladies struggle with daily, but that doesn’t mean they can’t relate to them. We’re all sisters, mothers, and friends just working to make it through the day.

The Originals airs Thursdays at 9/8 on The CW.

Lyra is a TV and movie enthusiast. It all started on a dark night when she turned on Fox and fell in love with the X-Files. It was all history after that as she got lost in Doctor Who, The Marvel Verse and most recently everything DC. Her love for Doctor Who lead her to study abroad, where she fell into live-tweeting and the lovely explosion of fandom life that Tumblr is. Her main love for the summer (with a mega re-watch happening) is Arrow. When she isn’t sharing her love for TV and movies she’s writing fan-fiction, taking care of her family, and puttering around her kitchen.

  • I love how female-driven this episode is. I wonder how any of these people survived before Freya came along. Cami was fabulous with Lucien. RIP witch Rebekah.

And the show is always more interesting when this useless Jakckson isn’t around, i hope his days are numbered.

    • I’m so glad you’re up for more female-driven episodes! They are strong, vibrant, intelligent women who steal the spotlight all the time. Why not give us more!? And you’re dead on about how in the world the Mikaelson’s survived without Freya. They’re at a major advantage with her on their side.

Jackson? *holds him close* He’s too perfect and pretty. Don’t hurt him! ;D P.S. Thanks for commenting!
