Outlander Season 8 Episode 1 Review: Soul of a Rebel
Outlander Season 8 Episode 1, “Soul of a Rebel,” pays to be sentimental.
The premiere kicks off the final season of the epic historical tale with an assault of loving gestures and family reunions. It is a polarizing departure from the onslaught of war we are accustomed to watching.
However, a little wholesome wallowing is needed after what Claire and Jamie endured last season.

With the series gearing up for a violent final stand, Outlander takes what time it can to appreciate just how expansive a legacy the Frasers have built.
This period of reflection is truly food for the soul.
The sprinkling of familiar faces across the episode makes their homecoming to Fraser’s Ridge extra sweet as gaggles of grandchildren support our beloved couple at every turn.
The battles and horrors of Jamie’s time feel distant in the embrace of this episode, as it’s cheesy rom-com style leans into the rose-coloured lens.
For one brief moment, we get to experience the dream Jamie and Claire have chased for eight seasons, and it is glorious.

The new Fraser’s Ridge set is breathtaking, and Outlander expertly navigates the issue of building an even grander homestead for the Frasers out of thin air.
By having Ian surprise the family with their dream home, the episode breezes past any formalities in a matter of seconds. Not to mention, seeing Jamie, Claire, and Fanny explore the new digs with nothing but pure joy on their faces as they take in each room is worth more than any formalities.
For a show all about living the highland dream with a rugged Scotsman, Outlander understands we, too, fantasize about returning home to a fully built log-mansion.
And as tantalizing as it is to get out and explore how the ridge has changed in Jamie and Claire’s absence, it’s the moments spent at the new house that hold the most value.

Roger and Brianna’s iconic “Hello House” greeting as they appear just offscreen really is a breathtaking moment for the series.
It’s such a well-executed reunion as the two families and their Season 7 storylines are reunited in a whirlwind of emotional embraces. Even better, Brianna brings a bag of tricks with her to escalate the plot.
Any time Jamie gets to immerse himself in a piece of Claire’s time, it makes for fascinating storytelling.
Jamie reading the modern picture book to the kids with a silly voice and his own commentary is a delightful use of the time-travelling books. It’s also a harmless prelude to the darker lore to come, and thankfully, Outlander wastes no time getting to the good stuff.

It’s such a dynamic piece of information. Frank, who should despise Jamie, went out of his way to write a coded message to the man, essentially outlining when and where the Scotsman will die in history.
And Jamie finds this message after learning that Frank is a dead ringer for his ancestor, Black Jack. It’s a reveal that is years in the making, and having Randall’s ghost come back to haunt Jamie and Claire one final time is exhilarating to watch.
This quiet, deliberate escalation of the plot through dialogue does far more for the episode than the heart-pounding opening scene.
Just as Jamie discussing his own death in such a matter-of-fact way is chilling, Jamie and Claire discussing the fallout of the Baby Faith revelation is far more noteworthy than that jarring monologue-heavy interrogation.
For a show forced to wield a weapon on the battlefield often, Outlander’s historical time-hopping nature has always thrived in the quiet revelations.

Additionally, our time spent on Fraser’s Ridge is so tantalizing that any diversions from the main storyline leave a fleeting impression.
As fun as the melodrama in the Grey household is throughout this episode, John and William’s bickering takes second fiddle to everything else. With so much story potential at the ridge, this season premiere is not the kind of episode that benefits from juggling multiple storylines.
That said, it would be nice to have more context on the Brianna and Roger front, as they are mysteriously down a time-travelling Mackenzie when they arrive in Jamie’s time.
Regardless of where in the world Buck is, this outing does everything it can to reunite us with our favorite Fraser’s Ridge residents.
The nostalgic, sentimental storytelling may speak to a calm before the storm approach, but we will remember this moment of respite long after the Frasers have said their final farewells.
“Soul of a Rebel” is an excellent start to what is sure to be an emotional goodbye tour.
