Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 8 Review: Birthday

Abbott Elementary, Reviews

Abbott Elementary Season 5 Episode 8, “Birthday,” presents a compelling showcase of Janine’s growth in more ways than one as her mother visits the titular school for her 30th birthday.

Meanwhile, Jacob’s creative choices for the annual winter show don’t sit right with Gregory, and Ava goes building shopping. The outing is a step up from last week for Janine’s heartstring-tugging storyline alone.

Taraji P. Henson guest stars as Vanetta, Janine’s mother. Henson delivers a gripping, layered performance. She elicits strong emotions simply by watching her.

You’re equal parts annoyed and shocked by Vanetta’s cutting remarks and narcissistic behavior. You also feel rage on Janine’s behalf.

This reviewer had to remind herself that Henson is playing a character because she is just that good in this role. Quinta Brunson holds her own, offering understated work, and her reactions to Vanetta are nuanced and heartbreaking. Brunson is so natural and grounded as Janine that her performance seems effortless.

Let’s face it — anyone who has a narcissistic mother recognizes Vanetta’s behavior. It’s true-to-life and relatable for those with similar relationships with their mom. For being a sitcom that occasionally incorporates larger-than-life elements, Abbott Elementary taps into something painfully real here.

Reparenting

“Birthday” marks a new chapter for Janine. Her confidence this season has been evident from the get-go, but we see it in action on this episode. For starters, even with the building falling into disrepair, Janine doesn’t let that impede her from carrying out her duties. She goes with the flow.

However, the biggest indication of her growth is the end of “Birthday,” when she decides to uninvite Vanetta from her birthday dinner. There’s a noticeable shift.

She chooses herself over trying to mend a relationship that, unlike the school’s structural issues, can’t be fixed. It’s proof positive that Janine had to parent herself, and here, she gives herself the love and support she needed from Vanetta.

Of course, Barbara is now Janine’s work mother, and in “Birthday,” she doesn’t disappoint. Like Janine, Barbara, too, has exhibited immense growth over the past five seasons. Janine and Barbara’s dynamic warms the heart and provides some cushion to soften the blow of Janine and Vanetta’s fractured relationship.

When I Think About the Future

This outing really puts Janine’s future under a microscope. She’s thinking about buying a house and getting married, even floating the idea of her and Gregory tying the knot (as a Granine shipper, this reviewer is squealing at the idea of a Granine wedding). Her ambitions seem to get to the root of Vanetta’s narcissism — the latter is envious. Janine turned out well-adjusted and ambitious.

While there’s no excuse for Vanetta’s behavior and abuse, Barbara mentioning Vanetta’s potential jealousy does give way to Vanetta’s self-examination. There’s a spark of remorse, which Henson plays well. Barbara’s observation cuts to the quick because it rings true.

Let’s Go to the Mall

Beyond the stellar A-plot, the supporting storylines aren’t quite up to par, but they offer a much-needed palate cleanser and give the episode some balance. Gregory and Jacob are always a fun “odd couple” pairing, while the school falling apart raises the overarching narrative stakes for Season 5 and sets the stage for the second half of the season.

It’ll be interesting to see how Abbott fares in an abandoned mall while the main building undergoes repairs. The comedic possibilities are endless. Regardless, the change of scenery will give the series a shot in the arm from a story perspective.

Switching up the formula can be a good thing. We’ll find out when Abbott Elementary returns after the winter break.

Stray Observations:
  • Mr. Johnson’s line about the rats in the pipes electing a new pope made me think of Charlie Kelly. After all, he’s their king.
  • The LGBTree is so stinkin’ cute. Jacob knocks that particular winter show decoration out of the park.
  • Really hope Melissa didn’t just eat asbestos when the ceiling started leaking dust…
  • Ask Jake Peralta — Die Hard is the ultimate Christmas movie.
  • Barbara is the best work mom ever. I love that Janine invited her to her birthday dinner.
  • Janine’s mother storyline profoundly resonates with me. I had to make a decision similar to Janine and oof. It’s tough.
  • Look, it’s John Economos! He quit working at Checkmate to become a maintenance worker.
