Loot Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Buona Sera
On Loot Season 3 Episode 4, “Buona Sera,” Molly’s ex John wants to pick her brain about a new foundation idea. At Arthur’s urging, she agrees to meet with him only to discover that he has a new woman in his life. Meanwhile, Howard attempts to make an impression on Sofia’s sister, Destiny.
It’s hard to watch Molly still get so angry when John returns to her orbit. But can we really blame her? We all have that ex who can send us spiraling despite how much work we’ve put into ourselves.
As frustrating as John is, this moment serves as a wonderful reminder as to why Arthur is so special in the first place. Arthur is an anchor; he supports Molly unequivocally, but grounds her when she gets up in the chaos of her old life. “Buona Sera” showcases how great they are as a team.

In many ways, Arthur shows life on the other side of a divorce for Molly. The ugly feelings from the previous relationship don’t have to come with you on your fresh start. He’s not perfect, but he’s proof one can carry the weight better.
Molly continues to demonstrate that her growth isn’t a fluke. Witnessing her actually let go of the anger plaguing her for two seasons now was utterly moving. John may not deserve her compassion, but she gives it anyway despite John the fact that he predictably ignores her.
Molly, though, no longer feels like she owes him something or expects anything from him. That moment of her being honest with John is genuine. She simply offers this out of kindness.

It feels exhilarating to feel Molly release John. The road ahead for her is a bit more open with that out of her way, especially for her and Arthur.
While Molly let’s go of a past relationship, Howard valiantly attempts to begin one.
The best part of Howard’s character has always been that he goes all in when he feels strongly about something. There’s no halfway with him. The path he takes may not always make sense, but it’s committed.
Howard’s earnestness manages to cut through the noise of the cynicism our characters constantly battle with on Loot.
He consistently sees what can be and allows delusion to drive the metaphorical car. Ron Funches’ bright-eyed energy infuses so much joy into the show, and it’s lovely watching him be allowed to go all in on that.

His unabashed earnestness pairs well with Destiny’s unapologetic self. The second she stepped on screen, we knew exactly who she was. She meshes well with Howard because she’s at the same authentic level he is.
Destiny having a role in the office not only paves the way for a fun, budding romance with Howard, but it allows for Sofia’s buttons to be pushed in a new way. Sofia is a character I adore, but she does repeatedly stay in her same comfort zone.
Even though Sofia and Molly have made strides with their dynamic, Sofia still remains rigid in her ways. On top of this, her lack of trust in Destiny is top of mind. Hopefully, Destiny being present in the office and dating Howard will pave the way for her to break the mold and soften in a new way.
Sofia: I hate improv. Have a plan, respect your audience.
“Buona Sera” is an episode about softening up. Molly is releasing her anger, Howard is opening his heart, and Sofia is making room for her sister in her life again. Vulnerability shows up in myriad ways, and the fact that this episode doesn’t limit its exploration of it is refreshing.
Stray Thoughts
- Ainsley making her D’s like the Disney D is a perfect character detail.
- D’Arcy Carden is always a welcomed presence so more Luciana would be appreciated.
- As reluctant as Nicholas is to participate in the improv dinner, I love how he shows up for Howard. Their friendship is fun.
- Adam Scott plays evil so well.
- Nat Faxon’s physical comedy is top tier.
