The Last of Us Renewed for Season 3 at HBO

News, The Last of Us

The Last of Us has received an early Season 3 renewal at HBO.

The news comes ahead of the Season 2 debut of the Emmy Award-winning series. The Last of Us returns with its sophomore season on Sunday, April 13, at 9/8c on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.

The second season takes place five years after The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 9, “Look for the Light,” which aired in March 2023.

The upcoming season follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they “are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”

In February, HBO announced that The Last of Us Season 2 would premiere in April. Meanwhile, HBO has been releasing sneak peeks for much longer.

As previously reported in September 2024, a trailer teased new characters after Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced joined the series as Abby and Dina, respectively, in January 2024. HBO unveiled the full-length Season 2 trailer in March 2025.

That The Last of Us trailer broke HBO and Max’s records when it amassed 156 million global views across platforms in its first three days.

Based on the video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog for the Playstation consoles, The Last of Us is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. “We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” creator, executive producer, writer, and director, Craig Mazin shared.

“The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with season three!”
