The Last of Us Season 2 Adds Kaitlyn Dever as Abby

Kaitlyn Dever is joining The Last of Us Season 2 as Abby.

Max’s X (formerly Twitter) account shared the news about the HBO Original series. Naughty Dog, who developed The Last of Us video game for the PlayStation platforms, confirmed the casting announcement with their post.

We’re thrilled that Kaitlyn Dever is joining @TheLastOfUsHBO Season 2 as Abby! We can’t wait to see her journey unfold on TV,” the post reads.

The character of Abby is present and pivotal in the video game The Last of Us Part II, and her character description is “a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved,” per TV Line.

TV Line also shared a statement from co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. “Our casting process for Season 2 has been identical to Season 1: We look for world-class actors who embody the souls of the characters in the source material,” the duo stated.

“Nothing matters more than talent, and we’re thrilled to have an acclaimed performer like Kaitlyn join Pedro [Pascal], Bella [Ramsey], and the rest of our family,” Mazin and Druckmann added.

The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 1, “When You’re Lost in the Darkness,” premiered in January 2023 on HBO.

The drama series follows the “hardened survivor” Joel and 14-year-old Ellie when the former is hired to smuggle the latter “out of an oppressive quarantine zone” because The Last of Us “takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed,” per its synopsis.

The show’s first season starred Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, and Nick Offerman as Bill.

The cast of The Last of Us Season 1 also included Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, and Elaine Miles as Florence, with Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

Days before The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 3, “Long, Long Time,” premiered, HBO renewed the drama series for a second season.

The nine-episode debut season ended with The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 9, “Look for the Light,” in March 2023, which “set another ratings high on Sunday night, delivering 8.2 million viewers across HBO Max and linear telecasts, based on Nielsen and first party data,” per HBO.

The Last of Us is based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name.

Written and executive produced by Craig and Neil Druckman, the HBO Original series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam executive produce The Last of Us.

PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog produce the show.

The Last of Us Season 1 is streaming on Max.
