Mythic Quest Season 4 Episode 8 Review: Rebrand
Mythic Quest Season 4 Episode 8, “Rebrand,” is a one-off outing that’s all about Brendan, aka Pootie Shoe, and his rush to become an adult. Written by Pootie himself, Elisha Henig, “Rebrand” pulls back the curtain on this recurring character and strips away his persona to reveal a determined, driven teen desperate to grow up.
Rebrand
“A Dark Quiet Death,” “Backstory!” and “Sarian” — if there’s one thing this series excels at, it’s the one-off episode. “Rebrand” upholds the show’s tradition of airing a side story (or side quest, if you will) related to the overarching narrative. However, this outing marks the first time we explore a recurring character and go outside the scope of the MQ.
If anything, “Rebrand” adds more colors to Brendan as a character. We see he’s more than the annoying, seemingly entitled live streamer. We feel for him regarding his strained communication with his father, Ian. Perhaps more importantly, though, what little we see of Ian here gives us insight into his headspace following his fallout with Poppy in Season 4 Episode 7, “The Room Where It Happens.”

Ian assumes that hiring a trainer for his son is enough to “redeem” him in Poppy’s eyes. He asks Brendan to text Poppy about this “selfless thing” he did. He also mentions that money doesn’t solve problems, and if you recall, in episode seven, Ian purchased Poppy’s pricey artwork to give her and Storm a financial boost. Unfortunately, based on his brief interaction with Brendan in “Rebrand,” it’s pretty damn clear that Ian still doesn’t get it.
It’s Always Sunny in Mythic Quest
Mythic Quest Season 4 blesses us with an appearance from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day. As expected, he kills it. He manages to infuse comedy and drama into his performance, putting his versatility as an actor on display. On a similar note, Alanna Ubach is also a lot of fun as Shannon and her appearances are always welcome.
Day’s character’s monologue to Brendan is equal parts heartbreaking and humorous. Those are words we all needed to hear at 17. Life will always lie in wait to punch you in the face — it’s inevitable. So, cling tightly to your youth.

What’s more impressive is that Henig, who was probably around 19 years old during production on this episode, penned “Rebrand.” Sure, he’s technically a young adult, but he’s not that far from adolescence.
Henig writes with a strong voice that’s wise beyond his years. Perhaps there’s an element of personal experience here, although everyone can find something in “Rebrand” that profoundly resonates with them. Henig has a lot of potential as a writer and will undoubtedly flourish from here.
While “Rebrand” isn’t Mythic Quest‘s strongest episode — and perhaps that’s because Pootie Shoe is a side character, so it doesn’t pack as much of a punch — its message is universal and effective. It also hammers home that everyone’s path to growth is unique to them. Sometimes, that path requires using a butthole rating system for video games (just ask Pootie Nation).

Stray Observations:
- Now, we need Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito to stop by Mythic Quest. We already have Alanna Ubach, Andrew Friedman, and Michael Naughton making recurring appearances. Let’s get as many It’s Always Sunny guest spots as possible — for the bit.
- I love Brendan’s “Feliz Navi-F*ck You Dad” Christmas text. It’s his usual “F*ck Off” response but with a festive twist.
- Did Spencer’s “I will roundhouse kick you into oblivion” remind anyone of Charlie Kelly’s “I’ll smash your face into a jelly” from It’s Always Sunny Season 1? The “roundhouse kick” mention is definitely a nod to Mac.
- Brendan getting knocked out instantly in the ring would happen to me, too. I feel for him in that moment. That said, it’s pretty damn comical.
- “Thank you for allowing me to do a selfless thing” — oh, Ian. Poppy’s words to him at the end of episode seven are still ringing in his ears.
