Reviews, Will Trent

Rap music and crime are a typical combination in many TV shows. Will Trent joins the standard, not the exception. Will Trent Season 1 Episode 9, “This Kid’s Gonne Be Alright,” brings Faith’s son, Jeremy, directly into the lion’s den.

Faith and Will’s strong bond may suffer because of this development.

Much of Season 3 revolves around Will’s sense of right and wrong. He does what he believes is right because his moral compass doesn’t waver. It’s what makes him excellent at his job.

However, it could cost him some of his most important relationships. In Season 2, Will makes the decision to arrest Angie, a decision that has permanently altered their dynamic. They are slowly rebuilding it this season.

However, if the show stays true to its promise, it won’t ever be the same. He seems headed toward a similar path with Faith. Will’s quick thinking helps Jeremy and protects Faith, but both actions may backfire.

Will could put Jeremy in more trouble and further his dangerous position. Will, also, selfishly endangers Jeremy to further his Rafael agenda.

In each episode, Will grows more obsessed with the criminal kingpin. His strong desire to take him down seems rooted in some resentment based on their shared history but opposing life choices.

Will simultaneously seems to love and hate Rafael.

This makes them Will Trent’s most interesting dynamic from his past yet. It’s so layered and complicated. It’s one that should last for many seasons. However, unfortunately, it seems like it won’t continue to Season 4.

The path for the rest of the season seems obvious, and this episode seems to have set everything in motion. The episode itself feels a bit lackluster.

“This Kid’s Gonna Be Alright,” sets up an exciting storyline with a murdered celebrity, Jeremy joins the mix, and then there is another really cool intro with Will walking into the crime scene while some great music plays.

It’s the most badass that Will has looked.

Then everything begins feeling too rushed. The crime is solved too fast, so the series can set up the ongoing Jeremy storyline. Though its a good direction for the show, rushing everything else to get to it takes away from “This Kid’s Gonna Be Alright.” It starts to feel like a filler episode.

“This Kid’s Gonna Be Alright” starts with a lot of potential but loses it by the second half — at least in terms of the main plot.

Angie’s secondary plot, with the accidental murder and her date with a doctor, saves it. Both plot points show growth for the character. Angie starts a new relationship and doesn’t immediately see the bad in someone.

We’re seeing Angie 2.0, and her becoming a more hopeful person. She may be having the opposite reaction to the Season 2 finale than Will.

Overall, “This Kid’s Gonna Be Alright,” is a fine episode but not nearly as interesting, entertaining, or cool as it could have been. Nevertheless, it sets up the end game for Season 3 and that has a lot of untapped potential.
