Will Trent Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Floor is Lava

Reviews, Will Trent

The loneliness epidemic and its dangerous consequences take center stage. Multiple storylines in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 4, “Floor is Lava,” depict this problem. However, the case of the fake CIA agents is the main source.

A powerful man uses his knowledge and charisma to manipulate a few lonely people into committing crimes. Sounds familiar? Initially, it’s easy to view this case as an outlandish concept.

People should have too much knowledge, free will, and tech-savvy to become victims of these scams. However, it happens often in today’s society. This is what gives “Floor is Lava” an eerie feeling.

This could and has happened in real life. The need to find companionship and a sense of purpose helps these conniving people find susceptible victims to their deception.

At first, Will Trent plays this situation comedically but later offers sympathy. Who has not sought company and fulfillment in the wrong hands or ways?

It’s a natural human mistake, but one that doesn’t usually lead to murder. However, these manipulated individuals aren’t anomalies but average humans.

The series doesn’t focus that much on the man who uses his charm and people’s quest for salvation and redemption to hurt people. This is one of the minor flaws of “Floor is Lava,” because it could have given the episode even more depth.

What turns someone to this level of deviousness? However, the ABC series makes up for not focusing on the criminal enough by allowing us to care about his victims.

Immediately, we judge this naive dog groomer but then learn about her history and how she became this victim. It gives her layers. It shows that the series understands the importance of offering multi-dimensional characters, even if we only see them in a single episode.

She is a culprit and a victim. This allows Will Trent to tie her storyline with Will and Angie’s continuous drama.

Will and Angie each truly believe they did the right thing. They also both think the other person did the wrong thing. You can see the truth in both of their stories.

Additionally, you may agree with one’s decision more than the other, but you can’t deny that they both did the right thing for them.

It makes Angie’s arrest more compelling.

Will is all about justice and following certain rules. It keeps him focused and makes him one of the best at his job. However, it also makes Will lack some interpersonal skills because of an intense sense of order and right versus wrong.

Angie is reckless with the rules. She follows them but is not above manipulating things that favor her. Angie does what she believes is right but not necessarily morally right.

They live by rules that work for them, but maybe not for each other.

Their opposite approaches to life made them work when they were younger. However, it might be what keeps them apart now that they’re fully formed adults.

Will Trent appears to double down on the plot that Angie and Will are over. It’s still unclear if we should trust the writers on this subject, but we’ll see how things unfold this season to confirm or dispute the idea.

“Floor is Lava” makes the main case interesting and layered while also tying it into Will and Angie’s evolving relationship. It’s a fun episode that showcases the series’s dramatic flare well.

Stray Thoughts
  • Ormewood and Faith: new besties or budding romance? Still unclear.
  • Ormewood is becoming Will Trent’s comedic relief, and it’s wonderful.
  • Sunny and Amanda’s storyline is really enjoyable. It feels realistic and allows Amanda more of a life outside the office.
  • “Floor is Lava” does a good job promoting Alias because now I might watch it.
  • Marian and Will are definitely a new romance in the making. Their wholesomeness is appealing.
  • This may be one of Will Trent’s funniest episode-openers. The awkward interaction between Faith, Angie, Ormewood, and Will should become a regular part of the series.
