Will Trent Season 4 Episode 14 Review: A Flag in the Mud

Reviews, Will Trent

Will Trent just needed a new enemy to turn the season around. Will Trent Season 4 Episode 14, “A Flag in the Mud,” deals with a mother’s desperate attempt to save her son. It’s a thrilling hour that shows the series at its best.

Usually, we watch Franklin, Angie, and Ormewood doing their own thing, while Will and Faith (sometimes with Amanda) work on another case. However, this is one of the few episodes where everyone’s storyline interconnects and leads to some very exciting moments.

The show doesn’t stray away from a fight scene. We have seen an increase in them since Season 3, especially involving Faith. She’s almost become like an action heroine. Now, Will, Seth, and Ormewood get in on the fun by having an Avengers-style moment on an elevator.

The fight is impressive because of the movement choreography, the directing, and how Will Trent manages to make it entertaining and feel like a real fight scene. Put Will in the Marvel movie franchise.

He’s ready.

Season 4 keeps getting better because this episode works as a standalone story about a mother trying to make amends by doing the wrong things. We also still feel the Adelaide storyline. It continues to haunt but operates in the background as an ever looming monster.

He wants to save Uncle Antonio, so he feels helpless. The writers succeed at making sure you understand why Will connects with this desperate mother. He feels a similar weight of guilt because of Adelaide.

You grow more sympathy for this mother as “A Flag in the Mud” continues, She’s not a bad person but in a terrible situation. She accepts there is no hope for her but she wants to make sure her son  survives.

She can go off to accept the consequences of her actions with a sense of peace. This is more than Will gets because Antonio’s fate remains unclear.

Then we get the big call at the end. We only have four episodes left in Season 4, and the show may use all four to drag out the Adelaide, Antonio, and Will storyline. We aren’t complaining.

This storyline adds so much depth, excitement, and intrigue to the season.

We need a dramatic finale involving all this and more. “A Flag in the Mud” feels like one of the most pivotal episodes of Season 4 so far. It’s starting to setup some major topics for the season finale.

Adelaide, Antonio, and Will are the main ones, because we don’t know if this ends in death. If it does, who dies? Antonio or Adelaide? There is even a world where they both die to devastate Will further.

However, the optimist in me believes that Antonio survives. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that Adelaide won’t kill someone else.

Seth found himself right in the middle of the danger in this episode. Angie even acknowledges that it scared her and now she understands his fear. Fans who believe that Seth may not make it out alive in Season 4 may feel a sense of hope now that he escaped death again.

We shall see. Antonio could be a misdirection to take out Angie, but Seth saves her and dies instead. The talk between Angie and Seth makes us think that his time may draw to an end soon.

We also get an interesting talk between Ormewood and Faith. He says he has something to tell her, but only reveals Franklin stole her drink. Nonetheless, they have this hug and conversation that seems to subtly suggest something is there.

This happening on “A Flag in the Mud” and not on the Season 4 finale may be foreshadowing them having  a romantically charged moment on the finale.

SONJA SOHN

This new relationship with Joan could just have been a distraction for the show’s plan to start the Ormewood and Faith relationship.

“A Flag in the Mud” is another strong episode for the season as we edge closer to the finale, the show seems to be setting up multiple potential finale moments and storylines with this one.  It also gives us a thrilling case of the week.
