Mythic Quest Season 4: Jessie Ennis and Naomi Ekperigin on Finding Jo and Carol’s Voices [Interview]

Interviews

As one of Apple TV+’s most highly anticipated shows returning, Mythic Quest Season 4 is going into some deeper waters with everyone on the Mythic Quest team.

This season, Poppy and Ian’s “work-work-life” relationship is on the fringes with the introduction of Poppy’s new boyfriend. On the other end of things, Dana, Rachel, and Brad will have to confront bigger problems, ranging from rival companies to problems with Playpen. Meanwhile, Jo and Carol are stuck in the middle of it all.

However, Jo and Carol’s careers have come a long way since Mythic Quest Season 1. This season, both of them take on a much more definitive role within all of the chaos.

I got to speak with Jessie Ennis and Naomi Ekperigin about Mythic Quest Season 4, how Jo and Carol’s important roles influence this season’s story, and their experiences filming the most anticipated episodes. (You can watch the interview below.)

Initially, Jo and Carol were just assistants, with Jo being David’s assistant while Carol was the human resources director for Mythic Quest. However, as fans have gotten closer with every character, Jo and Carol have had some sweet, fun, and crazy moments to make them memorable.

Looking back on Season 4, Ennis and Ekperigin recounted the Mythic Quest moment that really gave them a better understanding of their respective characters.

“For me, it really comes down to the end of the [Season 4],” Ekperigin began. “Carol sort of realizes, ‘Oh, I got to make a change. The change has to come from me,’ right?”

“Everyone’s coming to me, and everyone’s asking me for help,” Ekperigin continued. “She flips the script, and then she goes, ‘This could be a me, thing not a them thing,’ which I think [is] very relatable.”

“When we started this season, Megan Ganz sat me down and talked me through Jo’s arc,” Ennis recalled. “That was really fun to know the end result. A lot of times with television, you just know the episode, and so you’re just playing something, page by page.”

“I really knew what we were doing for the entirety of the season, and I love what we end up settling on,” Ennis said. “In the finale, she learned something that I can’t spoil, but it’s not really what she wants.”

While Jo and Carol have shared some fun moments throughout Mythic Quest, a few episodes in Season 4 stand out. One of these episodes is Mythic Quest, Season 4 Episode 4, “The Villain’s Feast,” where the Mythic Quest team is in for a night of devious activities.

Discussing that episode, Ennis and Ekperigin recalled what it was like to film in that location and how exciting the premise and development were.

“I love the way the show makes these departures into these one-off, bottle episodes, and that episode I’m particularly proud of,” Ennis said. “It was really especially fun to watch Jo take on this new character of the Alan Cumming-type character, and she has an accent for the episode!”

“My favorite [moment], there’s a moment where we’re all sitting around the dinner table,” Ekperigin recalled. “Everyone’s sitting around and it was just for me, it was just the chance for the whole cast to be together in one space.”

“We’re all able to get together and have these little side moments, Ekperigin continued. “It felt like Carol and David were kind of vibing being like, ‘Okay, they’re  friends, they’re gonna hang out,’ and it was fun to have that.”

“We also have a long oner, this long uncut scene that was kind of complicated really crafted brilliantly,” Ennis added. “it was fun to be a part of one of those special kinds of takes that it’s very choreographed… If anyone messes up we have to go back to the beginning and the fact that we got it, it was fun.”

Outside of Mythic Quest Season 4, both Ennis and Ekperigin have also worked on the creative side of things. Previously, Ennis developed her own short films before getting the role of Jo in the series.

Meanwhile, Ekperigin has worked on Mythic Quest as a supervising producer and has written for several shows, including Broad City.

Reflecting on their creative work, Ennis and Ekperigin discussed how their experiences as writers helped them find their voices as they’ve gone through their journeys as Jo and Carol respectively.

“On this show, it’s always been a very open-door policy, so the writer’s room is very welcoming to the actors,” Ennis explained. “We’ve had a really wonderful ability to collaborate with Megan and [Rob McElhenney] on different ideas that we have. Playing such a psychopath, like Jo, has made me so much more confident and able to tell someone to leave me alone!”

“Everyone in the writer’s room are just very good at knowing our voices,” Ekperigin added. “I think they’ve been so open to me also bringing in the voice that I bring to my stand up to Carol.”

“It’s like, ‘Don’t be afraid to do it the way you know you would actually do it.’ Being able to do that has been really fun and it makes Carol feel a lot of joy to inhabit,” Ekperigin said.
