Abbott Elementary Renewed for Season 5 at ABC

Abbott Elementary has a lot more to teach!

The comedy series has been renewed for a fifth season at ABC, per TV Line. The renewal is another early snag for the critically acclaimed series. With it, Abbott Elementary becomes the first series in ABC’s 2025/2026 programming lineup. 

As previously reported, its Season 4 renewal came just before Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 3, “Gregory’s Garden Goofballs,” aired in February 2024. 

The show’s Season 5 renewal comes a bit later in the season — the day before Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 11, “Strike,” airs on ABC. Nevertheless, the workplace comedy has become consistent with its early renewals. Even in 2023, it received a Season 2 renewal ahead of the network’s May Upfronts. 

One change for Abbott Elementary is that Season 4 moves the show to Wednesday nights’ 8:30/7:30c slot. Even so, the show continues to pull in viewers.

The Hollywood Reporter shares that Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 9, “Volunteers,” “drew 8.05 million viewers with a week of multi-platform viewing — a season high for Abbott Elementary and its second most-watched episode over that time frame ever, behind a post-Oscars showing last year.”

The outlet added, “About 39 percent of those viewers (3.15 million) watched the episode on Hulu or Disney+.”

“Volunteers” was the workplace comedy’s crossover with FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, announced in October 2024. Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 6, “Willard R. Abbott,” was the show’s post-Oscars outing. It featured Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper as a guest star.

Abbott Elementary is a mockumentary-style comedy that follows the staff at a Philadelphia public school. Its fourth season kicked off with Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 1, “Back to School,” in October 2024.

This week’s episode’s logline reads: “City buses have stopped running due to a strike, resulting in many students being absent from school. The teachers at Abbott try to find creative solutions and adapt to hybrid learning. Meanwhile, Gregory and O’Shon strike up a friendship.”

The comedy stars Emmy Award-winner Quinta Brunson as Janine Teagues, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson, and Emmy Award-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard.

Brunson, who created the series, executive produces Abbott Elementary alongside Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, Randall Einhorn, and Brian Rubenstein. Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios, produce the show.
