Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Adds Timothy Simons as Tantalus

News, Percy Jackson and the Olympians

While Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is heading for hellish waters, the excitement at Camp Half-Blood isn’t going away.

The show has found its latest guest star!

Variety exclusively reports that Veep alumni Timothy Simons has joined the series as Tantalus. The character is Chiron’s replacement as Camp Half-Blood’s newest activities director on Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2.

According to Variety’s description, via TV Insider, Tantalus is “sardonic, manipulative, openly hostile, and rarely in a good mood… seeing as he is cursed with eternal hunger and thirst, but can never eat or drink.”

Simons’s casting comes shortly after Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, and Kristen Schaal’s respective castings as Anger, Tempest, and Wasp, recently announced at this year’s D23 Expo.

Aside from Simons’s multiple appearances every season in Veep, he has also been featured in Hulu’s Candy as Pat Montgomery and Max’s Station Eleven as Jim.

Simons’s role as Tantalus will be intense, given the character’s involvement in Rick Riordan’s second Percy Jackson and the Olympians book, The Sea of Monsters.

In Greek mythology, Tantalus sought fame and glory after being offered to join the Olympian table by his father, Zeus.

However, Zeus refused and cast him out. That caused the king of Tantalis to seek revenge by cooking his son Pelops into a stew and serving it to the gods.

Ultimately, this forced Zeus’s hand to strike Tantalus down with the Master Bolt, sending him to serve eternal punishment in the Underworld by forcing him to starve and be thirsty to no end.

Tantalus’s inner anger is seen in the beginning chapters of The Sea of Monsters, where he completely hates everyone at Camp Half-Blood.

However, the book shows that he holds an exception for Clarisse La Rue (Dior Goodjohn), who gets sent on the quest for the Golden Fleece by Tantalus.

On the other hand, Tantalus continually hates Percy (Walker Scobell) and his Cyclops brother Tyson, to be portrayed by Daniel Diemer, as announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

Following the chariot race, Tantalus decided to punish Percy and Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) even though he was the one who restored the lost tradition of chariot racing.

With the sophomore season’s first teaser featuring that event, it seems like Percy Jackson and the Olympians is already setting all of this in motion.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 will premiere in 2025 on Disney+.
