Grey’s Anatomy Season 20: Everything We Know So Far
After an extra-long hiatus, the milestone twentieth season of Grey’s Anatomy is finally upon us. Premiering on Thursday, March 14th, Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 picks up where we left off with several major cliffhangers and sets up some suspenseful new storylines.
The new season will also see the return of some familiar faces and at least two new cast members.
Here’s everything we know so far about Grey’s Anatomy Season 20:
1. Ellen Pompeo is back as Meredith Grey
Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 saw Meredith Grey’s exit from Grey-Sloan Memorial. However, Meredith continued to be the narrator, and she returned a the end of the season, at least temporarily.
The actress had a reduced role that season and will continue to have a reduced role in Season 20, as she is now no longer a series regular. She will, however, make guest appearances, and she’ll appear on the season premiere.

2. It’s a shortened season
This season of Grey’s Anatomy will consist of only 10 episodes due to production delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
3. Teddy is in critical condition
Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 will pick up where Season 19 left off, with several intense cliffhangers. One of those cliffhangers was Teddy’s collapse in the OR.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 1, “We’ve Only Just Begun,” shows Teddy in critical condition, with Owen having to make a decision about a procedure. The description for that episode states that her fate will be revealed during the season premiere.
4. There’s a new showrunner
Meg Marinis takes over as showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy this season. Marinis has been with Grey’s Anatomy since Season 3, where she began as a writers production assistant. She became an executive producer in Season 15. The previous showrunner was Krista Vernoff, who has stepped down from the role for both Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19.
5. Arizona Robbins is returning
Jessica Capshaw is reprising her role as Arizona Robbins. The trailer for the season reveals that she’s back to help Bailey teach the interns. However, she isn’t back for long. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it sounds like she’ll appear in just one episode.

6. Nico Kim is back
Also returning this season is Alex Landi as Dr. Nico Kim, who we last saw in Season 18. There are no other details yet in terms of how long he’ll be back, but Landi posted this photo on his Instagram:

7. And so is Taryn Helm
Jaicy Elliot is back as Taryn Helm, and she’s no longer serving drinks behind the bar. At the end of Season 19, Richard convinced Helm to return, and he agreed to make her co-chief resident with Schmidt. We’ve already seen her back at work, and the photo from her Instagram below confirms that will continue.

8. Natalie Morales is the new pediatric surgeon
Natalie Morales joins the cast this season as Monica Beltran, a pediatric surgeon whose pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field. Her willingness to push boundaries can be admirable and aggravating, but it’s always aimed at providing top-quality care to her patients.
The trailer for the season shows her immediately butting heads with Amelia, which could make for some interesting interactions. (Fans are already speculating on the possibility of a romance here as well.)
9. While a return for Kate Walsh is possible, it doesn’t sound likely
Kate Walsh has returned a few times recently as Dr. Addison Montgomery, and while new showrunner Meg Marinis told TVLine that she couldn’t answer definitively and that “there are always opportunities for Kate to come back,” she also stated that the shortened season makes things like that more difficult.

10. Freddy Miyares is joining the cast in a recurring role
Freddy Miyares joins the cast in a recurring role as Dorian, an intelligent, warm, and likable patient who is involved in a serious accident and is struggling with his future.
11. The interns are facing serious consequences
Following the death of a patient, Sam, on the Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 finale, the interns are facing some serious consequences. The trailer for the new season shows Nick asking who he’s going to fire, the episode description for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2 suggests they’ll all need to redeem themselves.

MIDORI FRANCIS, HARRY SHUM JR., NICK TERHO, ADELAIDE KANE, ALEXIS FLOYD
12. Expect plenty of romance
All signs point to the beginning of a proper romance with Jo and Link, who finally declared their love for one another during the Season 19 finale.
The end of that season also saw Simone and Lucas getting together, regardless of how complicated that may be, and a budding romance between Jules and Blue. And the trailer for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 shows Jules considering the fact that she told Blue she loved him. Both storylines seem like they’ll good a get bit of attention this season.
On top of that, Season 19 also ended with Nick and Meredith getting back on the same page, hopefully for good.
13. Kevin McKidd directed the season premiere
Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt, is the director for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 premiere. McKidd has directed several episodes over the years.

14. Episode titles and descriptions
The first three episode titles of the season are “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Keep the Family Close,” and “Walk on the Ocean.” Episode descriptions have been released for Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episodes 1 and 2:
Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 1, “We’ve Only Just Begun”: Meredith rethinks her plans after going rogue in last season’s finale. The interns are on thin ice following a patient’s death, but Simone and Lucas are immediately tested in an emergency. Richard confides in Bailey, and Teddy’s fate is revealed.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Episode 2, “Keep the Family Close”: Bailey tells the interns they must complete dozens of basic procedures before being allowed back in surgery. Meanwhile, things are awkward between Simone and Lucas, and Amelia comes up with a solution to a complicated surgery.
