Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 10 Review: The End

Miracle Workers, Reviews

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

For a show that has been inconsistent all season long, it should come as no surprise that Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 10, “The End,” is lackluster at best.

There is no buildup to what is supposed to be some epic battle between humans and robots. Therefore, when it comes time for us to care about the struggle happening, we don’t.

In fact, it’s entirely possible to have this season conclude without the battle at all — that’s how unnecessary it is.

One of the most significant issues with this season is the writers attempting to do every story idea usually found within post-apocalyptic plots without having the time to truly explore them in the nature they are intended. Miracle Workers: End Times tries to do too much, making the season amount to nothing in the long run.

One of the more significant plot points is the introduction of John Christ and how his existence in the past is acceptable, but bringing him to the future spells disaster. The show tries to make a big deal out of John stealing Tai and Scrapps’ transport during Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 8, “Children of Women,” but fails in the follow-through.

Even his presence during Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 9, “John Christ,” isn’t enough to build up the war about to grace Boomtown. During that episode, John is simply seen as a radical protester out to create chaos, not protect the humans.

This lack of drive toward a human vs. robot storyline causes the robot army to be dead on arrival. Viewers find it fun but fail to see the urgency of what is happening because we haven’t been given enough time with NeuralNet to see them as an actual problem.

In the end, John Christ amounts to nothing more than a showy human with no fundamental leadership skills and talks more than he acts. When he dies, Scrapps comments that he can’t help rooting for the robots, and we must agree.

There is nothing about John Christ that makes us feel any kind of emotion toward the passing of this character.

In the End, What is the Point?

Ultimately, Miracle Workers: End Times struggled this season to establish a motive for the story and a reason to root for Sid and Freya. The writers create too many kooky storylines that lack depth, and they fail to bring any motivation to the audiences to care.

Where are these characters supposed to be going on their journey? Is there a point to any of these smaller stories in the grand scheme?

By the end of “The End,” the only substantial growth we see is with Morris Rubinstein. He is now friends with Tai instead of completely hating robots. It’s a nice touch, but it’s not enough to claim this season is worth watching.

The characters go through outlandish stories, so the show can say they tried it. There aren’t any reasons to move the bigger endgame along because, in the end, the endgame seems to be much of the same from the start.

With one minor change, Freya is an HOA instead of a War Dog. That might seem huge if only it hadn’t happened overnight. There is no big endgame because the writing fails to set it up throughout the season.

Previously on Miracle Workers, viewers know from the first couple of episodes where the story will end — whether it be saving Earth, finding your path, or reaching Oregon. Each of the previous seasons made sense in terms of goals and timeline.

Then there is Season 4 and the severe lack of direction. It’s still an enjoyable season because of the fun, dynamic characters. However, the lack of depth gets old and has us scratching our heads when it all fades to black.

Sid and Freya, Happily Ever After

For a couple that has prided itself on its unconventional ways all season long, Sid and Freya fall into mundane by the flashforward.

Maybe that is the point, after all, that Sid and Freya are destined to live the most mundane lives, forgetting their dynamic personalities. It’s an okay ending, but we’ve not been able to truly explore these characters enough to see where this growth is coming from.

The lack of meaningful follow-through is frustrating, apparent to the final moment, because it leaves us wanting more.

Miracle Workers has had its fair share of flop episodes over the years, but this is the first time the season hasn’t managed to give us a quality payout. Sid and Freya’s happily ever after seems cliched and contrived.

We are no more in love with these characters than we were upon first meeting them. Somehow, after ten episodes, we still barely know anything about them.
