9-1-1, Reviews

The title of 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 16, “Lost & Found,” has a double meaning when Chimney spirals about proposing to Maddie and ends up losing the ring he bought for her.

Sadly, this episode tumbles down a slippery slope and misses the mark it is trying to hit.

Hen and Chimney are the focus of the episode, with Hen by his side through the process of him picking out a ring and proposing. But things begin to slide when it becomes clear that she doubts the relationship.

It’s no secret that Hen cares about Chimney, and to a degree, her worry over him because Maddie disappeared last season is understandable.

Where things start to spiral, though, is when the fact that Maddie left because of struggles she was having with her mental health begins to rear its head.

The way they write Hen’s concern comes off as Maddie herself is to blame for all the lasting anxiety and trauma Chimney could have developed from the situation. It’s toeing heavily on the line of victim blaming.

There are approaches that could convey Hen is worried less about whether Maddie will walk out on Chimney and more about the lasting effects on Chimney’s emotional situation.

Mental health is tricky to talk about sometimes. Still, it’s essential to acknowledge that the hurt caused is from the situation and not the person struggling, especially in events like this where Maddie and Chimney have talked through everything. They took their time to forgive, come back together, and heal.

One thing that 9-1-1 tends to do well is the wild calls the 118 goes on.

“Lost & Found” is no exception, with two guys stuck in a junkyard and a call from a woman who believes her teeth are falling out.

The crazy sets, special effects, and makeup stand out on this episode, given how they executed both calls. The level of how graphic the show is willing to go is not lost here with the woman spitting out what she thinks are teeth and the clever camera angles when Hen is pulling out what ended up being tonsil stones.

The third call of the episode features a child seemingly being lost in a mall. He’s perfectly okay in the end but is only found after the mall bands together to find him.

It’s an interesting choice to have a bunch of strangers on the same page when the main characters spend a portion of the episode at each other’s throats.

Speaking of everyone going after each other, Chimney’s plans of proposing and his anxiety around the situation create issues for the team.

It’s a slight comedic turn that adds a bit of relief with Chimney losing the ring, and in his delusion of trying to find it, he turns on his team members to blame them.

9-1-1 has always done well with balancing drama and comedy. This scene does achieve that, but it is intentionally left tense. This is the breaking point for Hen struggling with Chimney wanting to marry Maddie, so the relief is little quips that don’t put out the tension entirely

The conversation that follows with Chimney and Hen does resolve the tension left in the episode besides the situation of the lost ring.

It helps sort out the issues that have been arising through the episode, and, as a whole, it lets the audience and characters move on from the tension that’s been there from the start.

Overall, it was another episode that stayed true to what 9-1-1 is at its core. There was complex found family dynamics along with the crazy calls.

Hen’s love for Chimney is vital even though the storyline could’ve been handled better. The 118’s support for Chimney shines bright in the episode when they’re excited for him to propose.
