The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 7 Review: Giorgio

Reviews, The Big Door Prize

It’s the Potential Fund gala night and the scene is set for some introspective moments and unexpected confessions on The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 7, “Giorgio.”

Cass’s Potential Fund gala fundraiser is fast approaching and Giorgio’s obviously willing to do anything to make it as perfect as possible.

The night provides to be an eye opening one for many of the Deerfield adults, as we see Dusty come to some realizations, Cass deals with another tough lesson, and Giorgio’s reason for his entire being becomes starkly clear.

Giorgio’s Life’s Potential: Superstar

Of all the stories and characters, I figured we would get a bit more depth and an intriguing story for the Deerfield restaurant owner.

Getting those moments with Hannah at the beginning of the episode provides a good introduction to Giorgio’s almost pathological need to be wanted. The way he kind of plays it off as cool but then he really just wants Hannah to define exactly what they are, gives viewers the answer as to his clinginess.

Pair that moment with his frank and unknowingly deep topic of long-lost fathers, it’s easy to see that his motives and some aspects of his personality stem from some unresolved daddy issues or a fear of abandonment.

Josh Segarra does an admirable job playing the moment obliviously and earnestly that you can simultaneously feel bad for him and absolutely detest the way he makes a move on Cass at the end of the episode.

We essentially get the multitudes that Giorgio can hold in this episode.

Elsewhere in Deerfield…

Dusty’s reevaluating a lot of his relationship with Cass in the most unexpected way possible. After being tasked with going on an ice run that isn’t necessary with Xander and head to Johnson’s general store.

What follows is a series of entertaining and hilarious moments of reflection for the pair as Jacob offers Dusty his primary source of anxiety relief.

Jacob: Do you want me to call my dealer?

Dusty: *stares*

Jacob: Right. Cool. I’m calling my dealer.

It’s a solid set up for an eye-opening realization as Dusty, the adult, spills his guts on the teen and former student. While completely weird given the current dynamic between Jacob and Dusty, I will say that the scene is quite endearing as they offer Dusty words of encouragement and Jacob confides in Dusty about his recent relationship complications.

In the vaguest terms possible, obviously.

The Johnson’s scene is one that seemingly shows that despite their best attempts adults don’t have it as together as they make it seem and that there’s a lot of commonalities between adults and teens.

An argument could be made, that the machine as a whole has kind of evened the playing field between the groups.

Meanwhile, we’ve got some more development on Father Reuben and Hannah’s of the romantic kind. It’s sweet and interesting that we see their dynamic shift a bit more since the last time we had these two in a scene together.

I like the complicated dynamic they’ve developed in such a quick, short amount of time. I just wish that we can get to see a bit more of it and really add an emotional investment to it.

But while we get to dive a bit deeper into Giorgio, the episode lacks some of the fun energy most of the earlier episodes have.

Though, Izzy trying to bust up the MORPHO machine and being caught is something that escalates things.

Random Thoughts

  • What’s the deal with Savannah’s reaction to Cass pulling her in to the conversation about France and does it have to do with Trina? Did I miss something?
  • Trina and her co-workers teasing Giorgio at the pre-event meeting is hilarious. There’s just something about the choice to play that “fascist” bit that makes the scene.
  • I don’t know what to say about the Cass thing other than one of the bigger lessons she’s seemingly learned is that men will be inappropriate and disappoint you. I will have to sit with her story for a bit longer to see where my thoughts go. I hope they continue to build on what she’s learned about herself and her relationship with Dusty.
