The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 6 Review: Beau
There’s a new sheriff in town…and Beau would like it to be him on another fantastic The Big Door Prize Season 1 Episode 6, “Beau,” as we see how he’s been dealing with his life’s potential.
With Coach Eagleson fired because of a cheating scandal, Dusty decides to take it upon himself to fill the role. Of course, he’s not alone. As Giorgio and Beau join in on the coaching in their unique way, Beau’s ulterior motives for helping the Deerfield basketball team are quickly revealed.
Almost despite his best efforts, he finds the answers he’s looking for emotionally.

Beau’s Life’s Potential: Sheriff
There’s something entertaining and sympathetic about how the episode shows Beau as he quits his Zamboni job instead, dedicating himself to solving a mystery that doesn’t need solving.
Beau: I’m not gonna be the backbone any more. I’m gonna be the front bone.
Aaron Roman Weiner’s comedic timing shines throughout the episode as we see Beau’s attempts at getting the answer as to who was the boy Trina cheated on Kolton with as he sets his sights on Tucker.
Weiner, Chris O’Dowd, and Josh Segarra play off against each other incredibly well in this episode as we see Beau, Dusty, and Giorgio take on the head coaching role. The trio’s team management is wildly hilarious and as chaotic as it sounds.
From Beau’s low-profile investigation and subsequent interrogation of Tucker to Giorgio playing hype man to all the boys on the team to Dusty blowing the whistle on Beau’s line of questioning when talking to Axel, it’s a delightfully wild time.

The basketball story helps to lighten the load of the heaviness that is soon to follow as it becomes clear who the “other boy” is in the cheating situation.
I like that we see a more involved Beau, and I wonder where he goes from the end of the episode now that he knows it was Jacob.
It’s safe to say that you can’t help but feel for the Kovac’s for various reasons.
Elsewhere in Deerfield…

Dusty’s attempts at “spreading his potential” and that (kind of mean) remark about Cass’s potential helps tie in some wonderful storytelling on the Deerfield teenagers’ parts.
Paired with the comedic display during practice, team bonding, and Trina’s conversation with her mom in the car, the story organically leads to one of the topics The Big Door Prize hasn’t touched on yet.

While the town’s adults are working through what their cards mean for them and the second chances it sometimes offers them, it’s quickly becoming a suffocating and stressful situation for the teens.
As some of the guys sneak away from the “saloon” to the Kovac’s kitchen with Jacob, you get insight into how many kids feel about what the cards mean to them. The entire conversation is so profoundly relatable and reminiscent of many of the pressures kids face when they have these ideas of success placed on them by their parents.
Glen’s Son: I don’t want to know who I’m supposed to be. I just want to keep doing what I like and what makes me happy.
It’s just a pitch-perfect scene and allows a window into the Deerfield teenage population that doesn’t feed into the tired tropes surrounding young adults on television.
Overall, it’s another entertaining, funny, and emotional entry into the series, and I can’t wait to see more of Giorgio finally.
Random Thoughts
- Despite its admittedly unorthodox origins, I was sort of rooting for Trina and Jacob. So, naturally it was sad to see them split up. But given the circumstances, it absolutely makes sense. Though, I wonder where the writers go with that and whether Savannah will come into play in the future.
- Though unsurprising, Giorgio’s reveal at the end still plays as a shock in a small way. Also, his bathroom looks hilariously exactly what I imagine a man like Giorgio would look like.
- Beau finding out about Jacob and the fact that he never noticed will be a catalyst for change in him. Right?
- Some part of Trina and Cass’s conversation immediately takes me back to Izzy and her performance at Principal Pat and Mr. Malik’s wedding. Am I the only one?
