The Resident Season 6 Episode 12 Review: All the Wiser

Reviews, The Resident

Until the final minutes of The Resident Season 6 Episode 12, “All the Wiser,” the decision to split the finale into two separate airing episodes may have been the wrong one. However, witnessing Sammie in pain proves the show was smart about its approach.

“All the Wiser” is not as amusing as promised, but things start to heat up as it gets closer to the 30-minute mark.

With the doctors at Chastain dealing with the most important patient they’ve treated in a long time, every step has to be extremely calculated. One misstep could mean the end of the hospital as they know it.

In previous episodes of The Resident, he had always been one to stay within the boundaries of what was right and wrong.

However, he makes it very clear that his choice isn’t for the governor. As a doctor, he cares whether this man lives or dies. As a person, he — just like everyone at Chastain — is tired of this man playing with everyone’s lives.

But what makes AJ’s determination to break the rules even more appealing is how he reaches out to Conrad. As he states, Hawkins once broke the rules to get what his patients needed.

Lucky for us, that Conrad is precisely where we last saw him: fighting for his patients. So even though Kit Voss isn’t happy with the decision, the truth is that bending the rules for one life will eventually help Chastain save hundreds of others.

As happy as we are to see a finale on the horizon for the governor’s storyline (possibly one that leads to a happy ending), some flaws don’t escape our eyes.

For starters, the new relationship between Cade and Yamada doesn’t make much sense. Do they suddenly have no feelings for Conrad and Billie? Or, as Feldman says, they’re playing musical chairs.

The two doctors had no fundamental interactions before their respective breakups, so their first scene in bed catches us off guard. But, in all honesty, it doesn’t seem like these characters are strong enough to sustain this storyline.

Billie and Conrad’s relationship seems to be moving just as fast; we also find them in bed first thing. But it makes a little bit more sense, given their story. However, it would have been interesting to see Gigi’s reaction to the news.

The other plotline where The Resident may miss the mark is Ian’s return. In previous episodes, he was ready to return and prove he was a different man. But, unfortunately, that is no longer the case.

He presents his resignation, and with that, he leaves us wondering what is going on. But, the Ian Sullivan we knew wouldn’t have given up so quickly.

Throughout Season 6, Bell’s void has been extremely felt. He kept coming and going between his MS treatment and Chastain. Even though he is back on “All the Wiser,” you wonder for how long.

Padma convinces Devon to partner with the anti-aging patient to bring funding for his MS trial. This is a win for Bell and, hopefully, for his fans.

With Bell moving on to phase 2, he may be back full-time if the show returns for Season 7.

The same hopes go for Padma’s character. At the beginning of “All the Wiser,” we can see her talk to Leela about the twins and how much she misses them.

Hopefully, if we don’t see her during The Resident Season 6 Episode 13, “All Hands on Deck,” she will return for another season, and her post-partum depression storyline will be explored deeper.

The Resident Season 6 Episode 12 - Tasso Feldman, Kaley Ronayne and Ian Anthony Dale

With a new heart on the way for the governor, Sammie struggling on a plane, and plenty of romantic drama, there is lots to unpack during The Resident‘s Season 6 finale.

Hopefully, this decision to split the dueling episodes will continue to prove effective, and the series will deliver precisely what viewers look for in a finale.

  • The Cade and James hookup actually makes sense, since they were both dumped. I’d call it the “Broken Hearts Club,” except for two things that happened last week: Cade literally told Billie she and Conrad never said “I love you”; and James seemed to know exactly what his relationship with Billie was, when she broke up with him. Was he disappointed? Yes. But, he wasn’t in denial or broken hearted. Cade was hurt, mostly because Conrad hadn’t realized his feelings for Billie earlier when everyone else knew, and she had directly confronted him about the dance at Kit and Bell’s wedding.
I’ve seen this happen a lot in real life. Two people are dumped, they bond over that and find comfort in each other. So, James/Cade makes sense. Right now, they seem casual. Whether that changes remains to be seen. They definitely have way more chemistry than Conrad/Cade did. In their few scenes so far, they’ve had more chemistry than Conrad and Cade did in two seasons. lol
