Thomas Brodie-Sangster, David Thewlis, and Maia Mitchell Join ‘The Artful Dodger’ on Disney+

Thomas Brodie-Sangster, David Thewlis, and Maia Mitchell lead the cast of Disney+’s upcoming Australian period drama, The Artful Dodger.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service announced the news at its Asia-Pacific content showcase event in Singapore on Wednesday.

According to Variety, The Artful Dodger “explores the adult double life of Charles Dickens’ famous prince of thieves, Dodger, who has become a surgeon but retains criminal tendencies.” Brodie-Sangster will star in the titular role, aka Jack Dawkins.

TV Line shares that Maia Mitchell ” will play Lady Belle Fox, while David Thewlis will fill the role of that crafty Fagin.” Thewlis recently appeared as John Dee on Netflix’s The Sandman, which was recently renewed for a second season.

Mitchell, known for her tenure of work as Callie Adams Foster on The Fosters and Good Trouble, recently stepped back from the franchise.

As The Hollywood Reporter relayed from Mitchell’s statement about her departure, she exited during Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 2, “Kiss Me and Smile for Me,” “to return to her native Australia.”

Mitchell’s latest project is set in 1850s Australia, and Variety confirms it “will be filmed in New South Wales, Australia, with financial support provided by the state government through Screen NSW’s Made in NSW fund.”

The Artful Dodger‘s official synopsis reveals that the eight-episode scripted series will explore everything, “From high-octane heists to life-and-death surgeries, glittering parties to colorful streets, this series is a rock ‘n’ roll tale with an Aussie connection.”

The Disney+ series cast also includes Damon Herriman, Miranda Tapsell, Tim Minchin, Susie Porter, Kym Gyngell, Damien Garvey, Jessica De Gouw, Andrea Demetriades, Luke Carroll, and Huw Higginson.

TV Line notes that The Artful Dodger also features “rising talents” Lucy-Rose Leonard, Nicholas Burton, Huw Higginson, Jude Hyland, Finn Treacy, and Albert Latailakepa.

The Artful Dodger is written by James McNamara (co-creator and co-executive producer), Andrew Knight (co-executive producer and writer), Vivienne Walshe, and Dan Knight, with Miranda Tapsell.

Per Variety, Jeffrey Walker is the set-up director and co-executive producer, with directors Corrie Chen and Gracie Otto.

The upcoming series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and produced by Beach Road Pictures and SPT’s Curio Pictures. It’s co-created and executive produced by Beach Road Pictures’ David Maher and David Taylor. Jo Porter represents Curio Pictures as executive producer Ross Allsop also serves as a producer.

The Artful Dodger does not have a premiere date on Disney+ yet, but it is expected to launch in late 2023.

The Artful Dodger will stream on Disney+ in 2023.
