Chicago P.D. Season 10 Episode 7 Review: Into the Deep
Chicago P.D. Season 10 Episode 7, “Into the Deep,” introduces us to what will probably be another season-long case. We definitely know more about Sean O’Neil now, but we are far from being close to the team solving the case.
At first, it seems like Hailey’s obsession will lead the Intelligence Unit down a rabbit hole. However, as the leads continue to come in and the squad investigates what is going on, we discover there is a real case.
The entire episode is divided into two. On the one hand, the case itself, is being worked on by everyone. On the other hand, the way in which Hailey is spiraling might put everyone at risk.
The Case Itself

The truth is, the Intelligence Unit has a solid case, but they need to find a way to connect it to Sean O’Neil. As always, Hank Voight has an ace up his sleeve and utilizes his resources to help the team get the paperwork they need to move forward.
But the beauty of this case is that Chicago P.D. allows us to see some really important characters in action.
A massive shoutout to Trudy for doing everything to make sure the team is safe and keeping the Chief from catching on to what they are doing. Her arts and crafts project gives the squad the opportunity to investigate without looking over their shoulder.
This is also done extremely well on “Into the Deep” with the transition between the squad room and their secret location. The camera follows the team as they walk; one second in the precinct, the next at their undercover apartment.
These little camera and editing tricks are what make the episodes so exciting and allow the cases to become more interesting. This is particularly true when we can hear Voight’s voice telling us what the next steps will be while we see the team preparing for a huge investigation.
Also, nicely done with the Lolita reference, completely in tune with the theme of the episode.

But Trudy isn’t the only one stepping up her game. “Into the Deep” gives us the opportunity to once more see how much Adam has grown and matured in the last seasons.
As he goes undercover, we are expecting him to be his old self — tempted to bend the rules and not think his steps through.
Even though Hailey gets mad and blames him for losing an important suspect, we know Adam makes the right choice. He does what he has to do to make sure the girl in the bar doesn’t get hurt.
That leads to a very interesting interrogation scene. The camera work is once again impeccable, jumping between Kim, Hailey, and Trudy as they question a victim who isn’t ready to speak up. It’s also the first time we’ve seen Trudy interrogate someone in a while.
Upton’s Case

Another thing this episode of Chicago P.D. does extremely well is show us how Hailey is spiraling out of control after Jay’s departure. She refuses to go back home, sleep outside of her car, and stop tailing Sean O’Neil and doesn’t report her OT.
This doesn’t go unnoticed by us or by the people around her. Trudy, Kim, and Voight call her out on her behavior, proving the team is still a dysfunctional family who wants the best for one another.
While the team is being logical, following leads, and waiting for the right time to act, Hailey is acting on impulse.
At one point, we are certain she is going to blow up the case and all the hard work would have been for nothing. However, Upton proves once more why Hank Voight trusts her so much (as much as this relationship may at times bore us).
It is her choice to approach Sean and talk to him about her destroyed marriage that gives them the biggest lead. But is this enough to catch him?

We spend the entire episode wondering how Sean continues to stay one step ahead of the team. The suspicions become even larger when Chief O’Neil approaches Voight in the parking lot.
Does he really not know what his son is doing? Or is his emotional breakdown just a cover for the fact that he too is involved?
It’ll be interesting to see how this case develops. It wouldn’t be surprising to see it take up all of Chicago P.D. Season 10.
