The Resident Season 6 Episode 4 Review: It Won’t Be Like This for Long
As happy as we were to find out Andrew McCarthy was joining The Resident as a series regular, it isn’t easy to be satisfied with his character anymore.
The Resident Season 6 Episode 4, “It Won’t Be Like This for Long,” proves Ian has never had control over his addiction.
At the end of The Resident Season 6 Episode 3, “One Bullet,” we were left with the expectations of what would happen to Ian after his failed drug test. Of course, he found a way to excuse it, but could this last? “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” proves it can.
Can Cade and Ian Find Each Other Again?

There was a time when we didn’t want to see Bell succeed, but he proved us wrong and became better.
Unfortunately, even though we continue to expect the same from Ian, he continues to fail us.
Addiction is a terrible disease, and it always has to be treated with respect on The Resident as it continues to expand on Ian’s storyline and Cade’s involvement. What “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” does well is connect the patient to Cade’s life story.
We still don’t get to see much of her or understand why she is the way she is. But this time around, we get a better insight.

Throughout the entire episode, we can tell she is struggling because the case hits too close to home, and her dad seems to be entirely out of it — she doesn’t know, but we know he is withdrawing from drugs.
Cade Sullivan seems to keep it together for most of the episode, but it’s no surprise when she hits a breaking point.
This is done in the form of a fantastic speech that Kaley Ronayne delivers perfectly — every word makes sense.
As Cade opens up about her childhood, the struggles of growing up with a father addicted to pills, and how unloved she felt her whole life, we understand why she continues to keep her walls up.

At the same time, we see Ian completely violating the rules — and probably many laws — as he uses a patient’s urine to pass his drug test. This makes it easier to side with Cade in hopes that one day she can get the happiness she deserves.
Ian’s outburst shows us he is not ready to get the help he needs. He doesn’t care about hurting patients or breaking his daughter’s heart again.
Everyone seems to be picking up on his erratic behavior, but only the viewers know what is happening. Something that The Resident does brilliantly in two different ways.
First, every time Ian shows a withdrawal symptom, the camera goes blurry, everything zones out, and you can hear his heartbeat very loud, as if you were inside his body.
Secondly, he relates to the newborn who is going through withdrawal herself. Had the nurse known Ian’s history, she would have probably seen the symptoms. “I’d be miserable too if I were withdrawing from drugs,” he says as he is indeed withdrawing from drugs.
Devon (Finally) in Action

Irving jokes about it, but we know it isn’t really a joke. Is Devon a real doctor if he hides behind his research the entire time?
Yes, what he does is extremely important and will help save many lives. But how long had it been since we last saw him kick ass on The Resident? Finally, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” delivers.
As someone Dr. Conrad Hawkins trained, Devon is not about to give up on his patient when he believes she has received a wrong diagnosis. Even with Irving’s anger — had we ever seen him like that? — he pushes forward and goes after what he believes is right.
Getting a little encouragement from his mentor, Devon helps his patient discover the accurate diagnosis, proving to all of us that he is still a real doctor.
Hopefully, our enthusiasm and his pride in solving the case will encourage The Resident to give us more of Pravesh in action.

While Pravesh is a hero, the other half of the self-titled “power couple” is doing precisely the same.
From the moment she shows up on the screen, Leela makes us feel like she will be an amazing character and an incredible doctor. So far, she hasn’t disappointed us.
However, as exciting as her first solo surgery is, you cannot help but feel confused by the statement that leads to that moment. She tells Devon that she misses cutting and things haven’t been the same since Bell left.
But didn’t we see her perform life-saving surgery on her sister Padma during The Resident Season 6 Episode 3, “One Bullet”? So, what exactly did she miss? Maybe what she needed was a challenge, and lucky for her, that is exactly what she gets this time around.
Conrad Will Always Be Conrad

One thing The Resident will always do is give us enough Conrad screen time to keep us happy and continue to make us fall in love with this character. And I mean, how could we not?
In his professional life, Conrad never gives up. He fights all odds and makes sure he gets justice for his patients no matter what. He will genuinely go to the ends of the world to find results and the correct treatment.
So it’s not surprising when time and time again, he does the same for his daughter. The Resident Season 6 Episode 1, “Two Hearts,” showed him helping Gigi through her nightmares. This time, he helps her overcome her fears about her taekwondo ceremony.
When Conrad is cheering for Gigi, we are all cheering for him.
After the loss of Nic, it is nice to see the two characters thriving. Hopefully, we will continue to see more of their dynamic because it helps the story grow and is incredibly cute.
Stray Observations
- How much longer can Ian keep pushing the boundaries? But for real, does using someone else’s urine work? Isn’t the hospital going to make sure that it is his urine? It seems a bit odd that he can get away with it. But, hopefully, he doesn’t, and that leads to him getting the help he deserves.
- Where was Kit Voss? We miss her and Bell on screen, but we’re hoping her absence is only preparing us for their wedding coming up on Episode 100.
- It was interesting to see Irving reacting to Devon, as we had never seen him so passionate about anything. It would be nice to see a bit more development for this character. Fingers crossed, Season 6 gives us more.
