Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 4 Review: All the Time in the World

Reginald the Vampire, Reviews

Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 4, “All the Time in the World,” takes a slight break from Reginald’s adjustment to give us some of Maurice’s backstory.

This is information that was very much needed and that I expected to see since Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 1, “Dead Weight.” I expected to see Angela painted as the villain, but “All the Time in the World” not only shows us how they came to blows but also the complicated history associated with it.

We see Maurice and Angela as flawed human beings who hold onto different ideals. It illustrates a vampire age gap well. Even though Angela and Maurice both want to change the world, Maurice has more to lose with his connections to his mom, while Angela is much older and doesn’t have that connection.

While it’s interesting to watch this play out, it also feels somewhat predictable. The story is well crafted and loves to provide us with twists and turns. Those twists and turns leave us to the only conclusion, and it’s exactly what we expected.

Watching Maurice’s mom step out into the sunlight after Angela turns her is heartbreaking. From everything we know, we can tell that that’s the beginning of the end and that there’s no way she’s going to accept that she’s been turned into a vampire. We’ve met a god-fearing widow who lost her husband, and while her son may celebrate his vampirism, she sees it as being snatched away.

Not to mention, unlike Maurice and Reginald, it’s unlikely she consented to be turned given her surprise. Since it was not a choice that she made, it wasn’t surprising that she would decide to go out on her own turns. That doesn’t make the scene where Maurice lets go of her hand any less powerful.

The events of “All the Time in the World,” also serve another purpose. They show us exactly how insidious Angela can be. While we knew that Mike was working for her after Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 3, “Hypnos,” we can now see the long game she plays.

We got a little bit of how domineering Angela is on “Dead Weight,” but “All the Time in the World” shows her need to control and her possessiveness over Maurice in a different light. It’s the kind of anger and resentment that has now had 50 years to brew and can make for a delicious back half of the season.

“All the Time in the World” isn’t just concerned about 1972. The glimpses we get of the present show that something is brewing and that there is more to the world than what we see. Maurice’s return to the house in pursuit of the herb for tea feels a little bit too coincidental. It’s hard to imagine why he had to go halfway across the country to look for an herb.

His interactions with Landry are interesting to a point, but their purpose becomes obvious very quickly. While Landry may have given us some insight into how much people know about vampires it also feels like aside from revealing what really happened, “All the Time in the World” didn’t really give us anything other than the reveal of a herb that makes humans toxic to vampires.

Yet, this episode is still strong, because while I may have some questions as to why Maurice had to go back to the scene of the crime, it’s giving us something to lean on for coming episodes. While we’re getting bits of Angela’s plan, how Maurice plans to defeat her is still up in the air and that’s what’s creating tension in the series right now.

Given how tight-lipped this series has been and how well-paced their reveals have been, I wouldn’t be surprised if why this herb is so rare and why Maurice has to return home is revisited in the coming episodes as we get more information about the vampire community through Reginald.

Overall, “All the Time in the World,” is a great character study that I am hoping has some lasting effects on the story. It gives us more insight into Angela and what’s at stake for her in the present. It’s a compelling setup that is sure to tear at our loyalties in future episodes.

Stray Thoughts
  • You know, I have to give it to the casting directors because casting the boy to play Landry in 1972 and then the adult was a good pick. I had a feeling they were the same person from the moment I saw him walk into his room.
  • I kind of love the way that this show just takes all the horror movie vices and says, “yea that’s movie stuff.”
  • Really hoping we see Eve gain. The more foils we get to Angela the more I am invested in her motivations as a villain.
  • The Star Wars references were the icing on the cake, a little light-hearted running gag that made us smile.
