Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Hypnos

Reginald the Vampire, Reviews

Reginald the Vampire Season 1 Episode 3, “Hypnos,” proves that this show knows how to create good character-driven content.

Looking back on these three episodes it’s hard to recount the big things that have happened on this series, mostly because it reads like such a slice-of-life series. If there is a larger plot, the series is just starting to allude to it, and that’s part of its charm.

One of the biggest moments on “Hypnos” is the introduction of Reginald’s ability to glamour other vampires. The bit with Eric being his manservant and making him breakfast fits Reginald’s personality so well. It’s heartbreaking when he glamours Eric to go away and find a new life, but if the series continues to expand its world, I bet we’ll see him again.

Watching Reginald lean into his gift since it makes him special is enjoyable to watch. Jason Batalon is great at showing us that delight and really making us lean into this idea that he’s a vampire, but he’s breaking all the vampire norms.

It’s given him a new perspective about being a vampire that he’s never felt as a human. However, that euphoria isn’t going to last. It’s clear that if he stays on the path that he’s currently on, his relationship with Sarah will end badly, according to Maurice.

The series is also dropping hints about the vampire community at large, particularly with the introduction of the assessment. On the surface, it sounds like an arduous task, but the fact that we know nothing about it outside of the fact that he will die ups the stakes.

Honestly, we know that Reginald has to pass or this task isn’t going to take place, because we can’t have a series called Reginald the Vampire without Reginald.

A b-plot that has some more traction, and potentially some more consequences is Ashley’s investigation into the strange and unusual. Ashley is quickly turned into the Slushie Shack’s Mulder as she begins to piece together what happened to Sarah and why she may have gaps in her memory.

It’s clear that at some point, Ashley is going to need to come into play eventually, especially as we get to learn more about the vampire community and infrastructure at large.

Ashley could be the missing piece in this unlikely band of heroes with her love of weird stuff, and I am here for it.

Reginald the Vampire continues to be a television show that defies characterization. It’s funny but continues to up the stakes, and it’s so character-driven that we can’t see the whole picture yet. It provides an enjoyable story and knows how to keep its plot interesting without showing its hand too much.

Stray Thoughts:
  • So there’s angel’s blood and then Sarah spent time in a cult that worshipped archangels. So, we’re going to see one right? Like there’s a whole world of magic underneath Akron, right?
  • Mike isn’t dead! That’s good. Spying for Angela? Not so good!
  • Claire continues to be the most adorable wingman. We didn’t see enough of her on this episode, but I love how their interactions are always so lighthearted.
