Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 4 Review: Las Muchas Caras De Un Hombre (One Man’s Many Faces)
Tensions are running high within the team as outside pursuits crowd the big picture on Los Espookys Season 2 Episode 4, “Las Muchas Caras De Un Hombre (One Many of Many Faces).”
Renaldo, Andres, Ursula, and Tati’s personal pursuits are starting to create some very palpable tension. At the same time, they sit with a new yet remarkably familiar face seeking Los Espookys out for a special gig: to make her husband understand how living in a world surrounded by people like him feels.
The client, the over-the-top scientist from last season, remains just as extra as ever. And while there are some funny moments, it doesn’t offer the same kind of comedy as the teacher’s meeting or the first meeting with Oliver Twix at the cemetery.

The gig quickly goes off the rails (thanks mainly to their client), leading to a quiet, reflective bus ride home.
There’s an absurdity to having a bus full of people wearing the same clothes and paper masks as the scientist’s husband. The fact that he initially bought it as he got off the bus adds to the tone and overall sense of an ominous event looming over the episode.
Though light on the laughs, this episode offers a change in dynamic for the core team that opens a new potential path for each character to explore.

Throughout the episode, everyone is dealing with some sort of distraction to take away from their work.
Renaldo’s dealing with his continued visions of Miss Belleza Latina haunting him leads him to continue exploring and reflecting on his sexuality. I appreciate how he comically just adds it to his to-do list behind things like “give Frutsi a bath.”
The mystery behind Miss Belleza Latina’s demise and why she continues to haunt Renaldo takes an interesting turn when he follows Tico’s advice to get over the visions and finds Karina’s coffin empty.

The discovery leaves you with about a thousand questions about the who, what, why, when, and where. Los Espookys builds on this mystery in a unique way that just leaves the viewer sitting there trying to connect the dots.
Is she really dead? Who has the body and why? Is this a roundabout way of connecting the Gregoria Santos arc?
Meanwhile, Andres is really working his “evil stepparent” role and owning it. His first big test as a parental figure takes a darker road than I initially anticipated, as his new man must travel for business.

Andres doesn’t seem built to offer comfort, solace, or support to those that could be considered vulnerable, so it’s no surprise that he’s not entirely equipped to pick up Alberto and Miranda from school.
I’ll give him snaps for that fabulously over-the-top hat. Still, his plan to lose them on their vast estate with the help of the Moon (yay, Yalitza Aparicio!) is a tad darker –both figuratively and literally—than expected.
With a move like this, it’s no surprise that Andres’ relationship doesn’t last much longer after that, following a pace that, for any other show, would not work. But Los Espookys makes it so that there’s always something odd, absurd, or hilarious (or all three) to keep the story moving.

Elsewhere, Tati’s inadvertent rise in the publishing ranks proves to be one of the constant sources of comedy while also providing plenty of frustrating moments. She continuously gets shots at these big payoffs and then elects not to follow through. This week’s fumble has her asking for eight US dollars…and then giving back the change!
You just want to root for the girl, but Tati is happy doing what she does, which doesn’t make sense to anyone but her, and while you want to wring her neck, you have to respect her outlook.
Seeing her sell her “Tati Editions” of books sold to schools on tight budgets is comical and depressing, though. It might have felt a little too real as we see the teachers and administrators talk about it.

While this is all going on, Ursula’s frustration with wasted time and not enough forward movement in either Los Espooky’s work, or Teresa’s campaign has her taking it out on Monica in a hilarious attempt at creating some sort of office customs.
Ursula ditches the team so she can help her candidate prepare for the upcoming debate. But between the things we’ve learned about campaign promises and Get Out the Vote strategies, not to mention the fortune teller from her cousin, it’s easy to imagine how badly the debate goes.

And it is a painful sight to watch, no matter how easy the result was to predict.
Despite the seeming apologies and conversations by the end of the episode, something still feels off with the team.
Will we see a team break up in the future?
Random Thoughts
- Tico’s attempts at helping his niece achieve her idea of a perfect party is a terrific way of bringing in more of Renaldo’s family and that dynamic at home into the periphery.
- Beatriz: I want to look sexy, and I want to look wealthy like a famous 25-year-old actress that plays a teenager in high school.
- Beatriz absolutely stole the episode with that one line.
- It’s amazing how one quick, throwaway moment has sparked my curiosity and has me asking: what is Tati’s purse?
