The Conners Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Scenes From Two Marriages: The Parrot Doth Protest Too Much
On what is arguably one of the funniest episodes of The Conners in a long time, viewers are treated to a look at both Jackie and Darlene’s new marriages.
The Conners Season 5 Episode 2, “Scenes From Two Marriages: The Parrot Doth Protest Too Much,” is a comical look at how we adjust to major life changes in the best ways. This episode could easily turn into a drama fest of negative moments for both couples, but instead, the humor prevails and love wins all.
Too Many Animals

LECY GORANSON, LAURIE METCALF, JOHN GOODMAN
We’ve known for some time that Neville is both a vet and much quieter than most of the Conner family. Never realizing that when Jackie moves in she’d be treated to an overabundance of animals to make up for awkward silences.
Neville means well, but not everyone finds ferrets and chinchillas as fascinating as he does — least of all Jackie. Especially when said animals stink up the house or prevent the human occupants from sleeping.
It’s wonderful to see Jackie give these animals a good college try before bringing up the subject of their presence to Neville. This shows a growth for her that is unexpected and worthy of being noted.
Even better is the following conversation that shows Neville is worried — despite marrying him — that Jackie will hate being around him if he doesn’t talk all that much. Then for them to read in silence together and have a silent conversation is the cutest thing ever.
I hope we get to see more and more of Neville as the season progresses because Nat Faxon is a quiet and kind addition to the cast with his portrayal of Neville. It’s always great to see Jackie enjoying herself for a change instead of constantly worrying she isn’t enough.
Too Many Activities

JAY R. FERGUSON, SARA GILBERT
First and foremost, Darlene is so real for only ever wanting to curl up on her couch and watch movies at home. I am a major homebody and her whole vibe during this episode is relatable AF.
When Ben first forces Darlene to participate in an out-of-home activity it seems as though a fight is brewing. Which, if we are being honest, is old hat for these two.
However, The Conners throws us a curveball and demonstrates through humor and good communication that Darlene and Ben are both growing together in their marriage. Darlene compromises with Ben on the whole date thing easily and with little protest.
In the past, she would’ve stuck to her guns about only doing activities from the comfort of home no matter what Ben wanted. Now, they are both talking about it like adults and coming together in solidarity with what each of them wants.
It bodes well for how they will be moving forward with bigger issues — such as problems that may arise with the renovation. I’m excited to see these two work through it all as a unit vs. two separate individuals.
Stray Thoughts:
- Dan was on fire with the zingers.
- Not gonna lie the ferret really was adorable — I want one.
