FBI Season 5 Episode 1 Review: Hero’s Journey
Yet another leaf on the ever-growing Dick Wolf tree springs up as FBI Season 5 Episode 1, “Hero’s Journey,” launches the new season.
Child hostages, explosions, and fatalities surround “Hero’s Journey,” and deliver a very alright episode of the show.
I’m just thankful we didn’t do a triple crossover again.
Cat’s in the Cradle

In speaking about Jubal being a father, we must acknowledge that we’ve watched him struggle with his child for four seasons now.
At different times there were promises that Jubal would be there more, he’d be more open and loving and free. So why are we going through yet another storyline where he’s absent?
Insinuating that he’s going through a phase like he didn’t just survive cancer and then almost become an incel is certainly a choice for Jubal. Not a good one.
The story has been recycled too many times over — between other crime dramas and on FBI itself — you no longer feel bad for Jubal. A part of you starts to wonder if maybe he should take a step back.
OA ‘Daredevil’ Zidan

OA channeling his inner Maggie is so good.
Usually, Maggie is the reckless one. She’ll run with a bomb, she’ll head towards the poisonous gas instead of away from it, and so on. OA takes over on “Hero’s Journey,” and I can’t help but think that maybe Maggie is the reason for this.
OA undoubtedly still blames himself, at least partially, for Maggie being out. Each time he throws a more dangerous idea out into the world, it’s like he’s taking away some of the hurt Maggie is experiencing.
The hole Maggie made when she left is ever-growing, but we know she’ll be here to close it up soon.
Alex Chapple, I Owe You My Life

The best part of “Hero’s Journey,” by far, is the directing.
Alex Chapple makes use of every part of the set the agents are on, or the area they have to work on. Instead of a regular procedural, Chapple makes it feel like you’re running with the agents.
There’s an especially stunning shot towards the end of the episode that shows OA running to the left and the car he’s just jumped out of driving to the right. The shot helps you realize how big the area is, how big the bomb is, and how small OA is.
Overall, there are quite a few things missing on “Hero’s Journey,” but that doesn’t stop it from being a good episode of FBI.
Stray Thoughts
- Imagine your wedding being evacuated because of people you never even met. I sincerely hope they get their deposit back.
- Please let FBI film on location more often. It’s so much more enjoyable than seeing them run down the same-looking street for the fourth time.
- I’m on my hands and knees begging Sam and Jubal to put Tyler in therapy.
