Chicago Med Stars Nick Gehlfuss and Jessy Schram on How Jesse Lee Soffer’s Exit Could Affect Will, What’s Next for Will and Hannah
The news that Jesse Lee Soffer is leaving Chicago P.D. doesn’t just affect that one show. Jay Halstead’s absence will also affect his brother Will, played by Nick Gehlfuss, on Chicago Med.
Chicago Med’s Nick Gehlfuss and Jessy Schram recently spoke with reporters about those effects on Will as well as what viewers can expect from the relationship between Will and Hannah this season. (You can watch the interview below.)
“I have talked to Jesse [Lee Soffer] directly. We are close because of the work, and so, because of all this, we will definitely carry a relationship outside of it. A very strong one. He welcomed me into this whole thing from the very beginning because I came in as his brother,” Gehfluss said. “I’ll never forget how he brought me in and showed me the ropes.”

In terms of how the exit will affect Will, Gehlfuss noted the loneliness it would cause.
“Jay and Will don’t have any parents living anymore. So the only people, as far as the One Chicago universe has explored at this point, are Jay and Will. And he’s going to be lonely,” he said.
“I think, actually, because of the void Jay will leave in Will’s life, that maybe he needs to settle down with somebody because he won’t have any immediate family around,” Gehlfuss added.

Naturally, that raises the question of what Will and Hannah’s relationship is going to look like moving forward this season.
“They are sticking to what they said they would do as far as start over,” Gehlfuss said. “I think that is what we’re seeing happen. And we’re exploring them individually as opposed to so tightly wrapped up in one another. And with that, it will allow a lot of growth for both of them, and I think that’s what they need to give them a fair and healthy shot.”
“They obviously care a lot about each other,” Schram said. They have such a history. There’s a deep love there. There’s just a lot of outward issues that have not been able to be gotten past.

“Therefore, starting over, they’re really going to be able to see each other how they are now, in this moment, in this season, in this hospital with who they are in the present,” Schram continued. “I think it’s just consistently unfolding on a professional and personal level.”
“But the fun moments will be where it challenges their goal of starting over, because something will be so intimate or familiar,” Gehlfuss added. “What will bubble up to the surface because of that, because no doubt they have a bond that they will carry with each other forever. And you can’t lose that, given their history.”
