Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 8 Review: Hello Darkness
Like the Arconiacs, I am also getting a little bored with how the story is progressing, but I’m planning on jumping ship and focusing on a financial show anytime soon.
Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 8, “Hello Darkness,” doesn’t really get interesting until those final moments when Mabel is talking with Detective Kreps, which seems to be the trend as of late — not learning anything of substance until the episode’s final moments.
There doesn’t need to be some mind-boggling twist revealed every five minutes, but if we could not leave the investigative developments until the close of the episode, that would be much appreciated. We promise we’ll still be anxiously awaiting the next episode, even without a cliffhanger.

“Hello Darkness” is a mixed bag. We get some good moments, but overall the episode isn’t as great as it could’ve been.
The episode features a fantastic suspense vibe as Lucy tries to outrun and hide from “the killer.” It’s done very well, and allows the show to delve into a bit of light horror for a change of pace.
While we suspect that Lucy isn’t actually in harm’s way — I can’t see the show killing a young girl like this — you’re still on the edge of your seat, urging Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to get up those stairs a lot faster

What is not so wonderful about “Hello Darkness” is that we spend time with Howard on a date.
It’s the most random storyline to throw in, and it adds absolutely nothing of value to the episode. Sure, there’s a fun little sing-along that the whole building joins in on, but other than that, nothing comes out of us watching this date.
The only random theory to explain why we have to sit through this that comes to mind is that the building committee that Howard, Nina, and Bunny were all on is all somehow involved in her death.
I can’t see Howard being the guy to actually do the stabbing, but maybe he was involved in the planning or simply voiced that he wished she was gone.

This theory could potentially explain why we’ve spent time with Nina and Howard separate from our trio. However, it doesn’t make watching Howard’s date more beneficial. It’s still a waste of time.
Hopefully, now that Mabel has found her glitter man, Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 9, “Sparring Partners,” will break the trend of waiting until the end to drop a twist or new piece of evidence. I hope that the bulk of the episode will be spent investigating him with a bit of podcast narrating sprinkled throughout.
I don’t think Detective Kreps is the killer though. We’ve still got two episodes left, and it is a bit too early to be on to the actual murderer.
His motives for warning the trio that night and for the general covertness of his operation remain to be seen, so maybe we’ll learn more about why he’s so invested in this case/our trio.
Stray Thoughts
- At least Lucy owns up to being there that night.
- There’s absolutely no reason for Marv to have busted down the door with that intensity if he was there to just help save Lucy.
- Nina promoting Lester is so sweet.
