Me Time Review: Great Cast, Okay Movie
Me Time, the latest Kevin Hart and Netflix collaboration, stars him, Mark Wahlberg, and Regina Hall. Many consider Hart to be one of the current funniest comedians. Wahlberg has roles in some really funny comedies, and, often, Hall is a scene stealer.
On paper, this movie has all the tools to succeed. In execution, it leaves us feeling underwhelmed.
Me Time is neither a bad nor a good movie. It’s just okay. Everything about it feels standard for a buddy comedy movie.

The film plays it safe by not pushing comedic boundaries. It also doesn’t really excel at following the comedy formula. There is nothing to loathe about this movie, but there is also nothing to love.
Kevin Hart can deliver a really funny joke, and that’s mainly due to his ability to utilize his full body in comedy. Some of the funniest moments in Me Time are when Hart is physically reacting to certain details, people, or objects.
The whole bark-off scene with Thelma, played by llia Isorelys Paulino, and his reaction to finding out he could become another sad crossing guard are two of the film’s funniest moments. Both scenes are short. However, Hart manages to make them stand out more than some of the longer scenes that are played for laughs.
Me Time needs more small moments such as these, and fewer battling animal scenes and poop jokes.
If you’ve watched enough comedies, you’ve seen plenty of poop and fart jokes. The world doesn’t need more of them.

Mark Wahlberg rarely plays the huge comedic presence in his comedies, but he holds his own. He’s funny enough and likable. However, Me Time doesn’t give him much to do.
Huck is fine as a character. He’s just not outrageous enough to really be that memorable. Huck has some funny moments but always feels like the sidekick to Hart’s Sonny.
Not utilizing Regina Hall more is the biggest mistake that Me Time makes.
Her character, Maya, has nothing funny to say or do. Hall is freaking hilarious, both as an actress and a comedian. Her comedic chops need to be used more in this comedy.

Me Time isn’t all bad. The child actors are especially charming and actually funny.
Che Tafari who plays Dashiell is a scene stealer. He nails all of his lines and makes us want to see more of his comedy. Amentii Sledge who plays Ava is quite adorable and also has some of the best Me Time lines.
A movie from the children’s perspective as they watch their dad flub up his life could have been a better movie.
The whole Fisher family feels organic and natural. Regina Hall and Kevin Hart have great on-screen chemistry, which I’m sure comes from years of friendship and working together.
Comedy legends John Amos and Anna Maria Horsford are very funny and wonderful in their few scenes in Me Time as Maya’s parents. Everything about the family works.

If the movie was made solely as a family comedy, it could have had a stronger premise.
The Fisher family stands out as one of the best things about this movie. IIia Isorelys Paulino’s performance also really stands out.
Thelma is the kind of unhinged character that can make or break a comedy. She helps give Me Time some really fun moments.
Me Time isn’t offensive enough to hate it, but it’s also not charming enough to love it. It walks the line of meh and okay. I want better for the cast.
Other Thoughts
- Turtles being a big part of the movie is random, but I dig that detail.
- Me Time has a strong roster of weird and enjoyable supporting characters, including Dorit, Combover, and Jill.
- It feels like George Clooney sponsored this film.
- No clue why Seal has a cameo, but love it.
- For someone who owes a lot of money, Huck really found ways to get favors out of people.
- Jill and Huck need to be a couple if there is any future sequels.
- The run-time of Me Time is nearly perfect. 101 minutes is plenty for this movie.
