Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of July 17th! We’ll share our picks for what to watch this week, from marathons to big guest spots, and significant TV episodes to watch.

This week’s picks include the Dark Winds Season1 finale, the debut of Rap Sh!t, the docuseries The Last Movie Stars, and more.

Dark Winds – Sunday, July 17

Already renewed for a second season, AMC’s break-out crime drama will conclude its first season as Sherriff Leaphorn and his team face off with the Buffalo Society. Dark Winds airs Sunday, July 17 at 9/8c on AMC.

Episode description: Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito descend on the hiding place of the Buffalo Society, only to be confronted with hard decisions that could change the outcome of the rest of their lives. 

Aftershock – Tuesday, July 19

Hulu’s new documentary examines the crisis of maternal health in the United States — including the racial disparities in mortality rates during childbirth — through the stories of activists, physicians, and impacted families. Aftershock premieres Tuesday, July 19 on Hulu.

Flim description: Following the deaths of their partners due to preventable childbirth complications and medical negligence, two bereaved fathers galvanize activists, birth-workers, and physicians to reckon with one of the most pressing yet unspoken American crises of our time — the US maternal health crisis.

Following the Season 4 finale that saw Zoey and the gang graduate, Season 5’s two-episode premiere will mark a new chapter for the series as Zoey navigates her post-college life with her brother now joining the fold. grown-ish returns Wednesday, July 20 at 10/9c on Freeform.

Episode 1 description: Zoey returns to Cal U to support Junior’s first day on campus but soon realizes that she may be missing her Cal U days more than she let on. After meeting his new classmates, Junior seeks to escape dorm life by attending Doug’s White Party.

Episode 2 description: Friction mounts between Junior and Annika when one of them is tapped for a secret society. Red flags start to arise when Aaron discovers the university is overusing his image to promote how “diverse and inclusive” they are.

The Last Movie Stars – Thursday, July 21

This six-part docuseries explores the lives, careers, and romance of Hollywood legends Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. Drawing on transcriptions of recordings made in preparation for Newman’s abandoned autobiography, the series offers a new intimate look at one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples. The Last Movie Stars premieres Thursday, July 21 on HBO Max. 

Series description: The Last Movie Stars is a six-part documentary from CNN Films and HBO Max that chronicles Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s iconic careers and decades-long partnership. Director Ethan Hawke brings life and color to this definitive history of their dedication to their art, philanthropy, and each other. Academy Award-winning director, writer, and producer Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer.

Almost Fly – Thursday, July 21

Music and politics collide on this six-part limited series from Germany. Almost Fly premieres Thursday, July 21 on HBO Max.

Series description: While the social upheaval in 1990 can be felt across the country, three school friends are confronted with the realities of the West-German province and dream of greater things. As they suddenly discover hip-hop, their entire life changes.

Rap Sh!t – Thursday, July 21

Following her groundbreaking series, Insecure, Issa Rae is back in the producer’s chair with a new half-hour comedy. Rae’s new series, which stars Aida Osman and KaMillion, will kick off with a two-episode premiere. Rap Sh!t premieres Thursday, July 21 on HBO Max. 

Series description: RAP SH!T follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna and Mia, who reunite to form a rap group.

The Old Man – Thursday, July 21

Chase’s history catches up with him on the finale of Jeff Bridge’s freshman series, The Old Man. The Old Man, which has already been renewed for a second season, concludes its first season on Thursday, July 21 at 10/9c on FX.

Episode description: Chase is forced to face the consequences for his past choices. Harper learns an impossible truth.

The Gray Man – Friday, July 22

Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans star in this new spy thriller. Gosling plays one of the CIA’s most skilled agents who finds himself in the crosshairs of a psychotic former colleague, played by Evans, after uncovering some unsettling agency secrets. The Gray Man begins streaming Friday, July 22 on Netflix.

Movie description: The Gray Man is CIA operative Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), aka, Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly-skilled, Agency-sanctioned merchant of death. But now the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.

Trying – Friday, July 22

The British comedy is back for a third season. After two seasons, Nikki and Jason are finally parents, but things are never that easy, and the couple will have to fight to keep their new family together. Trying returns Friday, July 22 on Apple TV+.

Season description: After a dramatic end to season two, the eight-episode third season of “Trying” picks up with Nikki (BAFTA nominee Esther Smith) and Jason (SAG Award nominee Rafe Spall) waking up as new parents to two children they are still getting to know. Now they just have to keep hold of them, which proves to be trickier than they initially thought. Thrown straight into the parental deep end, Nikki and Jason’s relationships with each other and with their nearest and dearest are tested as they desperately try to navigate the ups and downs of parenting — while hanging onto their kids, and their sanity.

Anything’s Possible – Friday, July 22

Billy Porter directed this uplifting rom-com about a romance between a young trans girl and her smitten classmate. Anything’s Possible premieres Friday, July 22 on Prime Video.

Movie description: Anything’s Possible is an uplifting and delightfully modern Gen Z coming-of-age story that follows Kelsa, a confident high school girl who is trans, as she navigates her senior year. When her classmate – nerdy-but-cute Khal – gets a crush on her, he musters up the courage to ask her out, despite the drama he knows it could cause. What transpires is a high school romance that showcases the joy, tenderness, and pain of young love.
