Loot Season 1 Episode 7 Review: French Connection

Loot, Reviews

No matter the plot on Loot — the show is wholly committed to developing its characters and their relationships with one another. They can even do this through relationships with outsiders!

Loot Season 1 Episode 7, “French Connection” feels pretty run of the mill as sitcom episodes go, but really gives emotional weight and context to many of the show’s core relationships.

“French Connection” continues to follow a larger story arc by exploring a love interest for Molly. Her first love interest since her very public divorce, and the comedy is found in the awkwardness of knowing whether someone’s interest is romantic or not. The humor doesn’t always land – but is still funny and relatable.

Nat Faxon as Arthur, Maya Rudolph as Molly

Molly’s potential romance is also used to deepen the relationships between her and the rest of her team. They use a staff meeting to thoroughly vet the guy, and every member of the main ensemble is invested in the outcome. Even Arthur — but probably for a different reason than everyone else.

It’s extremely smart of the show to give Molly and Arthur a scene alone here. Though they are both dating people in status stratospheres that are more comfortable to them — Nat Faxon and Maya Rudolph have incredible chemistry. It’s obvious that Arthur and Molly are endgame!

Loot feels a little more serialized that normal sitcoms. The structure feels similar — but it seems special attention is being paid to developing the characters and their relationships with one another.

Loot
Ron Funches as Howard

Friction and crazy situations are good, but ensembles who really develop chemistry and gel make the absolute best sitcoms.

Furthermore, the story between Nicholas and Howard is left on a cliffhanger, which further points to the serialized nature of the show. Their story also illustrates growth for characters on the show — particularly Nicholas.

Howard: Are you “Single White Female’-ing me right now?

Nicholas: No! What?! Have you seen that movie?

Howard: Yes I have, but here’s a movie I haven’t seen…GET OUT!”

Just like Molly has grown to the point of being ready to date again, Nicholas has grown to actually caring for someone other than himself. He and Howard are the ultimate odd couple, and Joel Kim Booster’s chemistry with Ron Funches is unmatched.

LootMichaela Jae Rodriguez as Sofia

Loot is funny in each episode, but “French Connection” really illustrates the slow burn, serialized approach they’re taking to developing the characters. It’s working, and hopefully means there is much more to come.

A few stray thoughts:
  • Sofia has really started to embrace the antics of the group. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez is doing a phenomenal job.
  • “Wait, have you really not seen Get Out?”
  • It needs to be appreciated that Howard got Nicholas two acting books and some printed out tweets from Randy Quaid as a congratulations gift. Every time I play a role from now on, I need the same gift. Especially the Randy Quaid tweets.
