Not Okay: A First Look at the Zoey Deutch and Dylan O’Brien-led Comedy
A satire about influencer culture starring Zoey Deutch and a blonde Dylan O’Brien? We are, in fact, not okay when it comes to Hulu’s upcoming film Not Okay.
The comedy, premiering July 29, began making noise on social media when it released a look at O’Brien’s tattooed love interest. It continues to win over the internet with Tik Tok trends and nineties fashion inspiration — all without a trailer.
What Not Okay does have is an official synopsis and rating. And it looks like the film’s grassroots social media campaign may be a tease for the internet insanity that awaits us in this summer satire.

Not Okay stars Zoey Deutch, Dylan O’Brien, Mia Isaac, Embeth Davidtz, Nadia Alexander, Tia Dionne Hodge, Negin Farsad, Karan Soni, and Dash Perry.
The synopsis reveals the film “follows Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch), an aimless aspiring writer with no friends, no romantic prospects, and — worst of all — no followers, who fakes an Instagram-friendly trip to Paris in the hopes of boosting her social media clout. When a terrifying incident strikes the City of Lights, Danni unwittingly falls into a lie bigger than she ever imagined.”
“She “returns” a hero, even striking up an unlikely friendship with Rowan (Mia Isaac), a school-shooting survivor dedicated to societal change, and scooping up the man of her dreams, Colin (Dylan O’Brien). As an influencer and advocate, Danni finally has the life and audience she always wanted. But it’s only a matter of time before the facade cracks, and she learns the hard way that the Internet loves a takedown.”
Quinn Shephard wrote and directed the comedy, with Brad Weston and Caroline Jaczko as producers.

You might be wondering, what more could this movie possibly give me? How about an R rating.
Indeed, this project will align itself with Hulu’s edgier streaming releases like Fresh, with a rating that promises to push the envelope of this unhinged premise.
O’Brien did recently joke on Twitter about the potential for a “slut era.” So, is it a coincidence that Hulu moved up this film’s premiere date shortly after, or is the team at Searchlight Pictures just that clever at promoting this movie?
Only time, and Tik Toks, will tell what special brand of chaos Not Okay has in store for us this summer.
