‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 to Focus on Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington’s Romance

The Ton received some big news: Season 3 of Netflix’s Bridgerton will be focusing on the budding romance between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington!

Variety reported that Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope, announced a recent panel at FYSEE, a Netflix showcase event.

This development confirms what many fans had speculated after the recently-released second season.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that at the event, Coughlan stated, “Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time, and I can confirm to you all that Season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story.”

“I have kept that secret since two weeks into Season 2. This is the first time I am saying it here,” she continued.

Bridgerton, based on the book series by Julia Quinn, chronicles the love lives of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The first two seasons on Netflix followed the romances of two elder siblings, Daphne and Anthony Bridgerton, respectively. 

The third book in the series, entitled An Offer From a Gentleman, follows Benedict’s romance with Sophie Beckett. It’s a Cinderella-esque story that many fans have expressed excitement to see adapted to the small screen.

Fans will have to wait a little longer to see Benedict take the spotlight. 

The fourth book in the series, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, tells the story of Colin Bridgerton’s romance with Penelope Featherington.

Penelope has continued to admire her best friend’s brother, and this upcoming Season 3 will turn the focus to their developing romance. 

At the end of Season 2, Penelope overheard Colin telling his friends that he couldn’t be romantically interested in her. Clearly, there’s a lot of drama to explore here. 

At the FYSEE panel, Coughlin spoke about how her character Penelope will need to evolve and start to see Colin as more than simply the crush she has had in the series so far. 

Executive producer Shonda Rhimes previously indicated to Entertainment Tonight that Bridgerton would not necessarily follow the book’s order.

Rhimes expressed the hope that each Bridgerton sibling will be given a chance to have their romances take center stage. 

The announcement that Bridgerton Season 3 will deviate from the order of the books follows the news that Hannah Dodd will be joining the cast, replacing Ruby Stokes as Francesca Bridgerton. 

The upcoming season of Bridgerton is expected to begin production sometime in the summer of 2022.
