‘Babylon 5’ Reboot in the Works at The CW
  • The CW is rebooting another cult favorite, with the network in early development on a new Babylon 5 series with original creator J. Michael Straczynski.
  • TVLine reports, the series follows “John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space. Babylon 5 serves as a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. Sheridan arrival triggers ‘a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined,’ when an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting him and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.”
  • Straczynski confirmed the news on Twitter writing, “To answer all the questions, yes, it’s true, Babylon 5 is in active development as a series for the CW. We have some serious fans over at the network, and they’re eager to see this show happen. I’m hip deep into writing the pilot now, and will be running the series upon pickup.”
  • Babylon 5 followed the crew of a 23rd century space station as they tried to keep the peace. Each season encompassed a year of the crew’s mission between 2257-2262. Following its end, the series continued on in spinoff Crusade, six TV movies, novels, novelizations, and comic books.
  • If you’re looking to catch up or re-watch, all seasons of Babylon 5 are streaming on HBO Max, and are also available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon Orders ‘The Boys’ Spinoff to Series
  • In this week’s most unsurprising news, Amazon has ordered its college based spinoff of The Boys.
  • According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is “set at America’s only college exclusively for young-adult superheroes (run by Vought International). It’s described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive superheroes as they put their physical, sexual and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities.”
  • Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Agent Carter) are set as showrunners. Previously announced cast members include Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Shane Paul McGhie, Aimee Carrero, Reina Hardesty, and Maddie Phillips.
  • “Much like Mork & Mindy spun off from Happy Days — which is an insane and true fact — our spinoff will exist in the Vought Cinematic Universe, yet have a tone and style all its own. It’s our take on a college show, with an ensemble of fascinating, complicated and sometimes deadly Young Supes,” said The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke. “Michele and Tara are stone-cold geniuses, we’re thrilled to have them steer this ship, and grateful to Sony and Amazon for the opportunity. We love this show and can’t wait for you to see it. Also, Baywatch Nights spun off from Baywatch, and it had vampires. Vampires!”
  • Fazekas and Butters were also recently announced as writers/executive producers on Peacock’s new Jekyll & Hyde series, Hide, with David Tennant.
  • The Boys Season 2 was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The show has wrapped production on Season 3, but no premiere date has been announced yet.

Renewals and Cancellations
  • With so many questions following Season 3, Netflix has renewed Sex Education for Season 4. Moordale has been shut down and Maeve is off to study in America, so there’s a lot we need to see resolved. Sex Education is currently streaming on Netflix.
  • Tony Hale will continue to pull double duty, as Disney+ has renewed The Mysterious Benedict Society for Season 2.
  • “This show has been an absolute thrill to work on,” Hale said in statement. “I’m so thankful to the fans and Disney for the opportunity to keep telling this incredible story.”
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society is streaming on Disney+.
  • Starz is impressed with new series BMF, because it’s picked up an early Season 2 renewal, per Deadline.
  • “Inspired by the true story of two brothers who rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980’s and gave birth to one of the most influential crime families in this country,” BMF airs Sundays at 8/7c on Starz.
  • Fans will continue to get drawn into the exploits of Billie Connelly, her husband Cooper, and the past she can’t seem to leave behind, as Sex/Life has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, per Variety.
