Though it sometimes feels as though it never left, Law & Order was canceled at the conclusion of Season 20 in May 2010.

“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said franchise boss Dick Wolf in a statement. “This is mine.”

The show became famous for its cast changes, with Season 20 featuring Jeremy Sisto, Anthony Anderson, S. Epatha Merkerson, Linus Roache, Alana de la Garza, and Sam Waterston.

Other notable cast members through the years include Jesse L. Martin, Chris Noth, Benjamin Bratt, Angie Harmon, Jill Hennessy, Elisabeth Rohm, Dianne Wiest, and the late Jerry Orbach.

Law & Order launched the modern procedural boom, in the process establishing its own expansive franchise, which includes current series Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime.

NBC originally ordered Law & Order: For the Defense to air during the 2021-22 TV season. However, back in July, the network decided not to move ahead with the show.

It now appears NBC will round out its Thursday night Law & Order schedule by getting back to its roots.

Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman of Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, in a statement. “This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”
