Chicago Med Review: I Will Come to Save You (Season 6 Episode 16)

Chicago Med, Reviews

The stories of April and Natalie come to a close on Chicago Med Season 6 Episode 16 “I Will Come to Save You.”

This doesn’t mean their endings are neat. It appears that Natalie will be fired off screen and April has just re-confessed her feelings to Ethan. Paying an ode to April’s relationships is one thing, but this stretches too far, leaving Ethan in an unfair situation moving into the next season.

Although these stories may be rocky, they still leave an impact on longtime viewers, and Charles’ story is profound enough to pick up the slack and solidify a strong Season 6 finale.

Ethan’s had it rough this season. This episode doesn’t help. April’s confession will certainly shake his world, considering she will no longer be on the show.

April’s exit is empowering and fitting, but her ending with Ethan is unnecessary.

Ethan has been closed off for most of the season. His promotion isolated him emotionally from many of the featured characters. April is leaving, and his friend who’s been devolving now has his job after he’s been shot. Talk about a rough year.

I’m all for emotional scenes for closure — they’re well deserved after spending six seasons on the show. This just doesn’t leave the remaining characters in a fair place. Especially when Chicago Med has been neglecting some in the first place.

Even if it’s disappointing Chicago Med is playing with this relationship ahead of April’s exit, but when it comes down to it, the scene is well played and emotion-invoking, which is really what Chicago Med wants to do, regardless of the in-show consequences.

Natalie’s exit progresses much more smoothly, albeit her employment status remains the same and even serves as the cliffhanger of this finale. Her story had been building to this all season, even perhaps all series, as she and Will continued to push the rules as far as they could.

Like April, she makes the rounds, but her conversations have a subtle hint of finality to them, even though she still doesn’t blatantly say goodbye to any of her loved ones.

Regardless of the fact that the romance between Will and Natalie has passed, this season and episode does a fantastic job at keeping their bond in place. As a viewer who wasn’t a fan of the two’s romantic relationship in the first place, I am a fan of their new platonic one.

Season 6 writes them to feel natural and strong, backing up Will’s need to protect Natalie by giving up his job in “I Will Come to Save You.”

Chicago Med also gracefully lets go of the relationship between Natalie and Crockett. Watching Crockett console and grow with Natalie was a pleasure throughout the season, and although there is not reason for them to break up yet, “I Will Come to Save You,” gives us a conversation that exudes that finality.

WHile Crockett didn’t affect Natalie’s impulsivity (to a detriment), at least this relationship allowed him to have plenty of screen-time as well as begin to heal from his tragic backstory.

There are positives to glean from this bleak situation, even if Natalie truly ran in a circle her duration on the show.

Even though these goodbyes and Maggie’s conflict with her biological daughter are episodes in the making, Dr. Charles’ story with his Russian patient is the most touching part of “I Will Come to Save You.”

Chicago Med is unique among many medical shows, treating mental health on the same playing field as physical health, even tangling the two, treating them both in the same location.

Even though on this episode the different specialities are somewhat separated, Chicago Med attempts to understand the conditions these men carried and allowed them to relate to each other.

Despite a few bumps, Chicago Med races to set the stage for a new season. The season finale allows time for closure and dedication, while making it clear that this show looks forward, not back.

With Archer now in charge of the ED, Maggie working with her biological daughter, and the fallout from Natalie’s crime, Chicago Med appears ready to embrace chaos in its seventh season as Natalie passes the baton.
