Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 6 Review: The Story of Us

Chicago Med, Reviews

Even though Bert’s health had been declining and we knew the end was near, it is sad to watch him pass on Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 6, “The Story of Us.” However, the family coming together to say their goodbyes opens the floor for secrets to come to light.

The beginning of the episode gives us a look into the Goodwin family life with a flashback to a family dinner. This is the perfect way to represent the unity these five people have always had. A unity that extends through divorce and has kept Sharon by Bert’s side at all times.

The love can be felt in the flashback, but also in the present. It can be felt when Sharon watches her children surround their father and sees them as the little kids they once were—proof, once again, of how important their family is to her.

As heartwarming as it is to watch the Goodwin children come together, it is also a revelation. Even though we had met the two youngest, “The Story of Us” is the first time we get to see David.

When the truth about David’s biological father is revealed, we understand his absence is a symbol of the secret he carried his entire life. He was always talked about but never seen, as if there was something about him that we shouldn’t know.

Tara tells Sharon that the secret she made David carry made him an outsider in his own family, which inevitably made him an outsider for viewers, too. While we always knew what was happening with his siblings, David remained a mystery.

By bringing him back to Chicago and introducing him to the viewers, David can finally exist in a world where his secret no longer pushes him down and isn’t his to carry. Now that there are no more secrets with his siblings, he can live without fear or shame.

Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 6, "The Story of Us" - Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Dr. Naomi Howard

After everything Naomi went through with a supervisor she was supposed to trust, we’re not surprised she says no to Frost on Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 6, “The Story of Us.” It is understandable that she seeks to keep her personal and professional lives separate, but is that really what she wants?

Of course, she turns to Asher for advice. Everyone knows Hannah has dated her fair share of coworkers and is currently expecting a child with one of them, but it seems Naomi is seeking Hannah’s advice as a woman who understands her feelings.

Asher’s advice is accurate; dating someone in the same field makes carrying the job’s hardships easier. However, it might have come a little too late as Naomi finds Frost in a cozy conversation with Novak.

As ready as Frost may seem to go on dates, he has a lot of internal work to do before getting there. It is obvious that he still struggles with his past and everything that happened to him as a teenager. No one disagrees that he deserves to find a loving relationship, but he also needs to love himself and maybe even forgive himself for whatever it is he is carrying.

Even though Novak seems nice and fun, Naomi might be better suited for him…only time will tell.

Ripley is once again a single man, and if we’re honest, he should stay that way for a while. Just like Frost, he has some internal work to do.

While he has grown so much since joining the show, the breakup with Hannah and the rushed relationship with Sadie seem to be clues that there is more for him to face. Obviously, the news of Hannah’s pregnancy shook his entire world, and there is probably doubt in there that he hasn’t faced yet.

Sadie makes the right choice by breaking up with him, but it isn’t yet clear whether Ripley understands why and what needs to happen for him to find another strong, loving relationship. Even though some viewers hope this will lead him back to Asher, not everyone agrees that would be the best option.
