Wynonna Earp Review: Crazy (Season 4 Episode 9)

Reviews, Wynonna Earp

On Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 9, “Crazy,” Trivia Night madness has taken over Purgatory. Everyone is suddenly very into trivia night and beating out their competitors. It’s a fun dose of competition, especially the revelation that Doc is good at trivia.

The actual demon of the week is a little lame, let’s be honest. She’s a super chill genie who seems to enjoy making her masters (ick) crazy.

There’s no big mystery to solve with her, just a bit of a fakeout. Aside from the connection to trivia night, the best part about the genie is the conversation between her and Wynonna at the very end of the hour.

The exchange suggests that Wynonna’s feeling the weight of her curse again. Recently, it has cost her Doc, but it seemed like she had accepted who she was and her role in this world. Back on Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 5, “Holy War Part 1,” Wynonna said that she wanted a demon-fighting life as opposed to a normal one.

So why the sudden change of heart?

Maybe, Wynonna losing Doc has put some things into perspective for her, and she believes that she can’t have him and do her job. Whatever the case may be, this is a curious bit of character development. With the end of the series not too far off in the distance, it makes you wonder what Wynonna’s future will look like.

Personally, I can’t imagine her not fighting demons with peacemaker, but Black Badge doesn’t suit her either. She doesn’t work well with government oversight; their demon-slaying styles clash.

For me, Wynonna will always be fighting some battle and keeping the town and the people she loves safe. Perhaps, she’ll get to a point where she doesn’t resent it as much, but I can’t see her laying down peacemaker and walking away. It also doesn’t seem likely that all of a sudden the world will be free of demons and monsters.

Wynonna working alongside Nicole/the Sheriff’s department with Waverly, Jeremy, and Doc helping her is what I see when I think about Wynonna’s future. Maybe Purgatory can ease up on the constant danger surrounding demons and potentially the garden, and Wynonna can just be there to help keep vampires/werewolves/killer jack-o-lanterns in line.

Nicole: I’ll fight for you too, Doc.

Doc: And I appreciate that, Sheriff Haught.

Nicole: You know you’re the only one who still calls me that, right?

Doc: The badge alone does not give the authority.

We have to talk about Nicole. It’s about time that we take another look at the trauma she endured when Waverly was in the garden, and how that affected her life in Purgatory.

Nicole’s storyline is a victim of the forced hiatus due to this lovely pandemic. It feels like forever ago that Nicole was suffering and withdrawn from the town; however, it was only earlier this season. So, it takes you a minute to refresh your memory on the extent of what she’s going through and what has already been addressed.

She lost everything, and Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 3, “Look at Them Beans,” explored some of that trauma. “Crazy” finally shows more of her fractured relationship with the town, and how she’s viewed by the people she once proudly protected as Sheriff.

I love that Nicole finds her way back to being the Sheriff. Protecting people is a big part of who she is, and it never felt right seeing her not on the force.

Despite the bulk of the push happening during this episode, Nicole being Sheriff again doesn’t feel rushed. Enough time has passed that she’s able to move past losing the election and embarrassing herself in front of the town.

It is sweet that Doc’s words are the last nudge to get her to address the town and take back her job as Sheriff. It wouldn’t have been surprising if Waverly gave her the final push, but having it come from Doc is unexpected and highlights their friendship.

We never really see any indication that Nicole and Doc are fighting, or that Doc is avoiding her. So it’s hard to feel relieved that they’ve patched things up because it never felt like they weren’t okay. However, it’s easy to understand that the guilt of the deal she made has been eating Nicole alive.
