Batwoman Review: A Secret Kept From All the Rest (Season 1 Episode 19)
Kate and Luke get into a fight on Batwoman Season 1 Episode 19, “A Secret Kept From All the Rest,” forcing Kate and Mary to try to do the job without him. It does not go well, but it is absolutely hilarious to see them try.
As painful as it is to see Luke and Kate fight, it gives Batwoman an opportunity to show how essential Luke is to the mission. The team is rapidly expanding, but no one can replace Luke.
Mary and Kate manage to make some headway without him, but they end up waiting for the other person to track the pacemaker before realizing that neither of them knows how to do it.

This is a fun way to shake up the dynamics a bit and give us some quality Kate and Mary time, even though it’s all work and no emotional heart to hearts between them.
And then, Parker shows up to help fill the Luke gap.
We last saw Parker on Batwoman Season 1 Episode 10, “How Queer Everything Is Today!,” and it is fun to see her again, especially in the batcave. Parker being there gives Mary the chance to be snarky about how she really was a last to know.

It is a little strange that it takes Kate so long to put Parker to work. It’s not like Kate doesn’t know what Parker can do, and Kate is painfully aware that the batcave is down a tech-wizard.
If Kate had kept Parker up top in the office area, then the delay would make sense. But Kate takes her right to the batcave, so as soon as Parker strolls in, you think she’s there to help. Anyone else bothered by this?
Even with Parker’s help, at the end of the day, the person Kate needs most in her corner is Luke, and it is fantastic that she tells him as much.
Luke: I’m not worth the death of Batwoman. I’m not worth seeing hundreds upon thousands of citizens lose hope as a result of whatever insane plan that Alice is formulating. I’m not worth all the lives-
Kate: We both know there’s no Batwoman without Luke Fox. I was lost without you today.
Their fight is handled really well. Despite walking out on Kate in defense of Julia, Luke looks into Kate’s allegations. He does this either to prove Kate wrong or because there’s a small doubt that says Kate wouldn’t be suspicious if there wasn’t something to be suspicious of.
Speaking of Luke and Julia, it’s great that their relationship is a focus of the hour. I kind of forgot that the two of them are childhood friends.
They really don’t interact at all unless Kate’s also there. Kate and Julia’s relationship has definitely been the focus as of late, so this reminder that Luke and Julia go way back is appreciated.

“A Secret Kept From All the Rest,” is a much-warranted love letter to Luke Fox. He learns to not diminish his abilities when comparing them to his dad’s, he shows some courage and stands up for what he believes is right, and he gets to hear Kate tell him how valued and essential he is to the Batwoman mission.
We had a brief respite from Jake Kane’s hatred of Batwoman, but sadly, we’re back to focusing on it.
Yes, Jake makes good points, but this whole “war” threat is a bit dramatic. Don’t The Crows have something better to do than stalk a vigilante?
Mouse: I mean if you want Kate dead so badly, why don’t you just shoot her? I’m sure Tommy will give you the friends and family rate.
Alice: So the last thing she sees is his gauze pad and his gun and has no idea what is happening? No. Her betrayal deserves a reckoning.
The issue with this vendetta Jake has is that it’s not interesting. The fact that Jake is unknowingly targeting his daughter doesn’t make for exciting tension. It’s a little been there, done that. Is anyone else flashing back to The Hood vs. Quentin Lance?
We all know how this is going to end, so let’s just pretend we did this storyline and move on to something else, shall we?
Stray Thoughts:
- I love Luke getting upset and attempting to come up with a lie every time someone else learns Kate’s secret.
- Tommy trying to work with Alice and Mouse is so much fun.
- Poor Mouse, his dreams have been dashed, and Alice can’t seem to care.
- Is the Bat part Kryptonian? Why is Kryptonite part of the secret to destroying Batwoman?
