Schitt’s Creek Review: The Job Interview (Season 6 Episode 3)

Reviews, Schitt's Creek

The latest episode of Schitt’s Creek, much like Alexis and Ted’s video chats, feels disconnected.

Schitt’s Creek Season 6 Episode 3, “The Job Interview,” is still very much a solid piece of television. It’s just not memorable in the ways this comedy can be.

But hey, they can’t all be winners.

Attempting to thrive after coming down from the highs of a perfect episode is never easy for any comedy to do. Thankfully, there is still plenty of topnotch wigs and ongoing concern for Twyla to keep this series from taking too much of a misstep.

Alexis and Ted set out to tell a long-distance tale of lust, dignity, and elegance. Of course, their video chats are quickly kiboshed by prying family and weird mating flies.

These constant mood killers more than make up for Ted’s absence from the last two episodes and showcase his ability to be both charming and a complete mess at the same time. Oh Ted, how we’ve missed you!

Thankfully Alexis recognizes that Ted spiralling isn’t half as fun without her and buys a turtle to add to this chaotic storyline. I don’t know what’s funnier, Moira’s instant dislike towards the turtle or Twyla’s concern about its whereabouts.

The couple’s candlelit computer date at the cafe caps off this episode beautifully and leaves more than just Alexis grinning from ear to ear.

David’s particular brand of self-absorbed comedy works best when his actions are reluctant yet earnest. He puts up a fight but his intentions are ultimately good and that’s what we love most about David Rose.

However, it’s difficult to figure out what David’s intentions are when he competes with Stevie for a job he doesn’t want.

I’m all for friendly rivalry, especially when it comes to these two, but this seems less like good fun and more like David taking his self-absorbed comedy a step too far.

Don’t get me wrong, David’s ability to not take criticism well fuels some of the episode’s best jokes. But his motivation for putting himself in this compromising situation is lost in translation.

Poor Stevie. Patrick leaves David for one day and he takes out his boredom on her.

Roland continues to be on his best behaviour.

That, in turn, helps bring Johnny’s search for a business loan to the forefront of this episode with little struggle.

Roland’s comedy is easier to take when he starts throwing around his title as mayor like it means something. I also love how in Roland’s mind dating the bank manager’s mother is also something worth using as leverage when, in actuality, it’s a quick way to be told to leave.

It says a lot about Johnny’s character growth when his first reaction upon hearing Roland and Jocelyn bought the other motel is not to panic but to be genuinely happy to have them as business partners. It’s lovely to see how the dynamic between the Roses and the townspeople has changed for the better as they learn to trust each other.

It’s rather sad to see Bob not put Johnny through the wringer during his time on screen. Thankfully the tragic development that Gwen has left Bob and is trying to take his house is just too wild not to find some kind of sick humour in all of it.

Stevie as a flight attendant would be amazing. Love that journey for her.

But it’s not the only journey for Stevie and this episode does a wonderful job of demonstrating the potential this storyline has going forward. I’m here for Stevie going on a crazy self-made journey of happiness and being open to all kinds of occupations that are sure to be as interesting as Larry-Air.

Schitt’s Creek spends much of this episode allowing Stevie to branch out. However, a throwaway line of Moira’s quickly reminds the audience that one character still feels trapped by her circumstances.

Nowadays Moira rarely speaks about the town as a prison she needs to escape from, so to hear she still feels that way after everything that’s transcribed is disappointing. Especially when everyone else has seemingly found their calling in this small-town world.

One can only hope the series spends more time on what happiness for Moira will look like at the end of her journey because this just doesn’t cut it.

“The Job Interview,” does not showcase the best of Schitt’s Creek, but it does showcase another memorable cold open from the final season.

Broadcasting Alexis’ disastrous attempt to have dirty video-chat sex to her entire family prospers from the same level of humility as David’s bedwetting cold-open.

This episode feels very much like a job interview should: confusing, uncomfortable, and a bit unnerving.
