When It Comes to the Success of One Chicago, Dick Wolf Says It’s All About the People

Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., Interviews

Many of the cast members from Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med will tell you they love working on their shows for one main reason: the people. And Executive Producer Dick Wolf agrees.

At this year’s One Chicago press day, Dick Wolf sat down with reporters to talk about what he’s most proud of when it comes to the three shows.

“It’s a pretty big family. Everybody gets along. I mean, there are no squeaky wheels in the cast. I don’t know how many — I think five of the actresses live in the same building,” Wolf began.

“I’ve never had anything like it, which is, I think only visible to the audience by the fact of how good they are together. There are no line counters. There are no — ‘where’s my close-up?’ It’s a remarkably ensemble-like world.”

All three of the Chicago series now air on the same night. Chicago Med, now in its fifth season, begins each Wednesday night at 8/7c. Chicago Fire, which is in its eighth season, follows at 9/8c, and Chicago P.D., now in its seventh season, ends each night at 10/9c.

“It’s also very good that this season has opened the way last season closed, which is, there’s no clear winner. [The shows] work perfectly together,” Wolf said. “The shows are really good shows. Good writing, and it’s always the writing.”

Wolf also noted how difficult the crossovers are to film, with extra work for everyone to bring the shows together, and lots of reshooting to be done in order to get everything right.

In fact, Wolf shared that he jokingly promised everyone working on the shows that for this crossover, which airs on Wednesday, October 16th, that they would definitely stop shooting before the episodes aired on TV.

But the hard work everyone puts in always pays off. “I love the result. It’s extraordinary.”

The One Chicago crossover event will air Wednesday, October 16th beginning at 8/7c.
